Mis primeros ilustradores/ My first illustrators

A la espera de que “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos” llegue a mis manos y a las vuestras (ya me han dicho que está en proceso de maquetación), le debo esta entrada a mis alumnos.

Hoy les he leído un cuento mío inédito que irá incluido en el segundo libro de cuentos que publique (si habéis visto el vídeo de la presentación de “Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados” sabréis que los cuentos tendrán como protagonistas a criaturas fantásticas y no a animales) y les he pedido que se conviertan en los primeros ilustradores.

Siempre intento que adquieran gusto por leer y me aprovecho un poco de ser escritor para encender en ellos esa llamita para que lean todo lo posible.

El resultado ha sido este que veis, ¡no han podido hacerlo mejor! Les he prometido que subiría los que mejor quedaran, y aquí lo tenéis. Espero que os gusten tanto como a mí.

Still waiting for my new book to get published (I’ve been told they are already editing it), I owe this post to my students.

Today I have told them a tale written by myself that will be one of the six stories included in my second children book (with fantastic creatures as their protagonists) and I have asked them to be the first illustrators.

I always try to instil them the taste for reading and I take my author position in advantage to light a small flame in them and try to make them read as much as they can.

This is the result; they’ve done it fantastically! I have promised them that I was going to upload the best ones to my blog, so here you go. I hope you’ll like them as much as I do.

Noticias importantes/ Important news

Hago un breve paréntesis en medio de la serie de entradas sobre el proceso desde que se tiene la idea hasta que se publica el libro para contaros una noticia muy importante.

Mañana, lunes, empiezo a trabajar en un colegio nuevo. Intenté de todas las formas posibles recibir un salario justo (sí, justo, porque cobrar 300€ menos que el resto de tus compañeros no lo es), tener un contrato por lo concertado y no por lo privado, pero no ha habido manera.

No quiero entrar en detalles negativos ni hablar de ciertas personas que ni merecen la pena ser nombradas. Simplemente quiero tener palabras de agradecimiento a la inmensa mayoría de mis compañeros, geniales profesores y mejores personas aún; a mis niños, que son los niños más bonitos del mundo y que me han dado tanto cariño en este mes y pico que me han desbordado, ¡siempre os recordaré!; y a los papás y mamás, que me han dejado sin palabras con sus palabras hacia mí y mi trabajo y me consolaron el viernes cuando no pude retener más las lágrimas y me rompí delante de ellos.

This is a small break in the middle of the series of posts about the process from the idea until the book is published to tell you something very important.

Tomorrow, Monday, I start working in a new school. I tried and tried to receive a fair salary (yes, fair, because earning 300€ less tan the rest of my colleagues is not fair at all), but I have not had any choice to have it.

I don’t want to get into the negative aspects and I am not going to talk about some people who don’t deserve to be even mentioned. I just want to have thankful words to the most of my colleagues, brilliant teachers and amazing people; my children, the most beautiful children in the world, and all the love they have given me in just a month and a few days, I always remember you!; and the parents, you have left me speechless with your kind words to me and my way of teaching and thanks for consoling me last Friday when I couldn’t control my tears.

Semana del libro/ Book week

Después de pasar un tiempo dándole vueltas a cómo intentar que el blog sea (o siga siendo) interesante, he anotado varias ideas que creo me ayudarán y que iréis viendo en los próximos días.

Hoy, sin embargo, os cuento los planes que tengo para la semana del libro, que me tienen muy contento:

Martes 19: taller de ilustración en mi colegio con Marta Marbán de Frutos, como sabéis, la ilustradora de “Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados”.

Jueves 21: charla con alumnos de Magisterio en la Facultad de Educación de la UCM sobre literatura, educación y los puntos positivos de ser escritor cuando se es profesor de primaria.

Viernes 22: cuentacuentos, “Las bufandas de Lina”, en mi colegio, ¡disfrazados y todo!

Os contaré qué tal sale cada acto.

After a while thinking how to try to make the blog interesting (or keeping it being so), I have written down a few ideas that I think will help and that you will check in the next days.

However, today I want to tell you the plans I have for the Book Week, plans that make me very happy:

Tuesday, 19th: illustration workshop in my school with Marta Marbán de Frutos, as you know, my book’s ilustrator.

Thursday, 21st: meeting with Teaching students at the Education Faculty to talk about education, literature and the possitive aspects of being an author when you are a teacher.

Friday, 22nd: storytelling with one of my tales in my school.

I will tell you how it goes!

¿Cómo me ven mis alumnos?/ How do my students see me?

En la prueba de lengua de este mes, les hemos pedido a los alumnos que describan a alguno de sus profesores. Casi todos los míos, como era de esperar, me describieron a mí.

Al principio no estaba seguro de si era una buena idea o no, pero después de leerlas, me he quedado muy contento (y me he reído mucho).

Así por encima, lo que más han repetido ha sido que soy bueno y cariñoso, que soy muy buen profesor y les enseño muchas cosas, que soy divertido y que (no podía faltar) soy un poco gruñón.

Tendré que cuidar un poco más esas regañinas (aunque lo hago por su bien), aunque me gusta saber que, aunque las haya, me ven bueno y cariñoso.

In the Spanish exam of this month, we have asked our students to describe some of their teachers. Nearly of my children, just as I expected, have chosen me to write the description.

I wasn’t very sure at the beginning, but, after reading them, I can say I feel very happy (and I had such a great time while I was doing it).

What they have repeated the most has been that I am good and loving, a good teacher and that I teach them a lot of different things, that I am funny and (it couldn’t be forgotten) a bit grumpy.

I should take care of those grumpy talks (even if they are meant to help them), although I like knowing that, although they exist, they still think I am good and loving.

Librerías y papelerías para un maestro/ Bookshops and stationary shops for a primary teacher

Siempre he tenido una debilidad especial por dos tipos de tiendas: las librerías y las papelerías. Será el olor a papel, el orden, los colores, las letras, el material para escribir… El caso es que no puedo pasar por delante de una sin entrar.

Como digo, siempre me ha ocurrido, pero ahora que soy maestro, la debilidad es aún mayor. Creo que a los que nos dedicamos a la educación estas tiendas nos deberían pagar una comisión, ya que muchos nos dejamos una buena parte del sueldo en ellas.

A los que, además, nos dedicamos al inglés… Una visita a Londres no tiene sentido si no me paso por Foyles, Waterstones, Paperchase y un largo etcétera de librerías y papelerías en las que pasaría días enteros. Mis últimas adquisiciones, el verano pasado y este último fin de semana, son todos estos libros que uso como premio cuando mis alumnos se portan bien y que me encantan, además de algo de material de papelería más que nunca vienen mal.

I have always had a soft spot for two kind of shops: bookshops and stationary shops. Perhaps it is due to the smell of new paper, the order, the letters, the material for writing… But the truth is that I cannot just walk by without getting in.

As I have said, it has always been like that, but now that I am a teacher, the soft spot is even bigger. I think these shops should give us some fee because some of us spend half of our salary on them.

To those who work with English… A visit to London is pointless without visiting Foyles, Waterstones, Paperchase and a lot more bookshops and stationary shops where I could stay hours and hours. My last acquisitions are all these books that I use as a reward for my students when they behave and that I love, apart from some stationary stuff that is always very handy.

Mens sana in corpore sano

Con este inicio del nuevo curso y todo lo que ello implica, quiero hablaros en esta entrada de algo que, al menos a mí, siempre me ha ayudado mucho en mi vida académica y laboral: el deporte.

Como muchos sabéis, siempre he hecho deporte (judo, natación y waterpolo, principalmente) y hubo un tiempo en el que lo hacía bastante en serio, lo que implicaba muchas horas de entrenamiento y mucho cansancio. Aun así, el deporte siempre fue y es fundamental para mí. Además de por las razones obvias (hacer ejercicio, estar en forma, conocer gente, los valores que lleva aparejados…) también porque me ayuda a desconectar de las rutinas diarias y a organizarme el tiempo de una forma más eficiente.

Por eso, también ahora que tengo mi jornada completa como profe (muchas horas, mucho cansancio…), he vuelto a sacar gorro, gafas y bañador y vuelvo a jugar al waterpolo en Madrid, además de continuar jugando los torneos que pueda con mi equipo de Londres.

Para los papás que me estéis leyendo y que os preguntéis cuáles son las mejores opciones a la hora de las extraescolares para vuestros peques, tened muy en cuenta el deporte, y mejor aún si es deporte en equipo.

With this beginning of the new scholar year and everything that goes with it, I want to talk about something that, at least in my case, has helped me a lot throughout my academic and working life: sport.

As some of you know, I have always made sport (judo, swimming and water polo, mainly) and there was a time when it was quite serious, lots of training hours, lot of tiredness. Even though, sport has always been essential for me. Apart from the obvious reasons (doing some exercise, keeping fit, meeting people, learning some important values…) also because it has helped me to disconnect from the daily routines and to organise my time in a more efficient way.

For these reasons, even now that I have my full-time-job as a teacher (lots of hours, lot of tiredness…), I have rescued my cap, my glasses and my trunks and I will play water polo in Madrid once again, and I’ll also play some tournaments with my London team.

For those parents that are reading me and ask yourselves what are the best activities for your children, take sport into account, specially if it is a team sport.

Bienvenidos/ Welcome

Bienvenidos de vuelta al blog después de unas largas vacaciones y, sobre todo, bienvenidos mis alumnos a un nuevo curso. Sí, habéis leído bien, “mis alumnos”, porque tengo trabajo en un cole y, la verdad, ha sido un golpe de suerte por el que estoy muy, muy contento.

Es un segundo de primaria con veintisiete monstruitos un poco charlatanes pero con muchas posibilidades. De momento, me ha tocado ponerme el disfraz de ogro (lo sé, no me pega mucho), pero estoy seguro de que es un grupo que va a trabajar muy bien.

Soy su tutor, les doy lengua, naturales, sociales e inglés y, además, doy el inglés de los otros dos segundos.

Del libro tengo mucho, mucho, mucho que contaros, pero creo que esta es la noticia más apropiada para empezar este nuevo curso.

Welcome back to the blog after a long period of holidays and, above all, welcome my students to a new scholar year. Yes, you have read it properly, “my students”, because I have a job in a primary school and, to be honest, it is been a stroke of luck that has made me very, very happy.

It is a Year two group with twenty-seven little monsters a little bit chatty but with a lot of opportunities. By now, I need to wear an ogre fancy dress (I know, it doesn’t fit me much), but I am sure they will work very well in the near future.

I am their tutor, I teach them Spanish, Science, Social Studies and English and I also teach English to the other two groups at this year.

I have so, so, so much to tell you about the book, but I think this is the most appropriated new to start this new “year”.

Para los que no lleguéis a mi Facebook, os comunico por aquí que el próximo martes, día 30 de junio, presentaré mi libro «Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados». Lo haré junto a Marta Marbán, ilustradora y amiga, y Manuel Francisco Reina, escritor y amigo también. El acto, como veis en el cartel y la invitación, tendrá lugar a las 19.00 en La Casa del Libro de la calle Alcalá, 96 (Metro Goya).

Estáis todo más que invitados, ¡pero os agradecería que me comunicarais si vais a asistir!

Seguimos avanzando/ We keep going on

Seguimos dando pequeños pasos que me hacen ver que mi sueño se está cumpliendo. En estos momentos me cuesta hasta alegrarme de las cosas, pero todo lo que vaya consiguiendo será un homenaje a mi madre, y por ella haré todo a partir de ahora.

Como veis, ya se anuncia la presentación del libro en la página web de La Casa del Libro (pinchad en la imagen para acceder a ella). Ayer me pasé por allí y tiene muy buena pinta.

We keep taking steps that make me know that my dream is becoming real. In these moments it is very hard to be happy, but everything I do will be a tribute for my mum, and everything I’ll do will be because of her from now on.

As you can see, the launch of my book has been announced on the website of La Casa del Libro (click on the image to go to their web). I went to the bookshop yesterday and it looks nice.

Una realidad…/ Something real

Hoy, día 2 de junio de 2015, Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados es una realidad.

Casi no me lo creo cuando mi hermano me ha escrito y me ha dicho que acababa de llegar una caja con los libros y me ha mandado esta foto…

Os podréis imaginas la ilusión que me ha hecho y lo nervioso que estoy… ¡Y las ganas que tengo de poder tocarlo!

Seguimos dando pequeños pasos… 🙂

It was hard to believe it when my brother has texted me saying that there was a box with the books and has sent me this picture…

I am sure you can imagine the excitement I am experimenting, the nervousness… And how much I want to be able to touch it!
