Mis sirenas particulares/ My particular mermaids

Momentos tan bonitos como este son el que me dejan cada día más claro que dedico mi vida a quienes más amor despiertan en mí: los niños.

La Fundación Make a Wish ha querido que Ángela conozca a sirenas de verdad, y yo no conozco a sirenas más reales que Alba Cabello (exintegrante y excapitana del equipo nacional de natación sincronizada) y Opalina, la protagonista de uno de mis cuentos y de la portada de mi libro “Un corazón para Opalina y otros cuentos fantabulosos”.

Ángela ha podido disfrutar de Alba y espero que también disfrute de mis cuentos, así como de la sirena que Marta Marbán de Frutos creó para ella.

Gracias, Alba. Gracias, Marta. Gracias, Make a Wish. Gracias, Ángela. Y gracias a la vida por darme momentos tan especiales y emotivos como este.

The Make a Wish Foundation wanted Angela to know real mermaids, and I do not know mermaids more real than Alba Cabello (ex-member and ex-captain of the national synchronized swimming team) and Opalina, the protagonist of one of my stories and the cover of my book «A heart for Opalina and other fantabulous stories».

Angela has been enjoying her time with Alba and hopefully she will enjoy my stories and the mermaid that Marta Marbán de Frutos has created for her as well.

La magia y la fantasía son parte de la realidad/ Magic and fantasy are parts of reality

He tenido que esperar un día para publicar la entrada por dos motivos: el primero, quería esperar a tener las fotos que hizo mi querida Tamara (¡lo que te debo!) y, segundo, estaba y aún estoy algo sobrecogido.

No tengo palabras para describir lo que sentí ayer a lo largo de toda la tarde. No tengo huecos en el pecho para guardar todo el cariño que recibí por parte de tanta gente. Desde la maravillosa presentación de la maravillosa Carmen Guaita “Jorge es un poeta”, el “¿por qué eres tan buen profe?” de uno de mis alumnos hasta las palabras tan preciosas que me dedicó la mamá de otra de ellas “la suerte que tenemos de tenerte como profe de nuestros hijos es inmensa”, pasando por todos los comentarios de muchos de quienes nos acompañaron me llegaron muy dentro y me hicieron estar más y más de seguro de lo afortunado que soy por poder dedicarme a trabajar por y para los niños.

Me han dicho algunas de las personas que han estado en las presentaciones de mis tres libros que esta ha sido la que más les ha gustado, y creo que es porque fue un acto muy real, muy sincero y muy emotivo. Una vez más, intenté no llorar, pero me fue imposible, aunque poder seguir emocionándome con momentos como el que viví ayer me llenan de satisfacción y de alegría.

No quiero enrollarme mucho. Solo quiero dar las gracias una vez más a todos los que me seguís apoyando libro tras libro. Sois mi fuerza y mi felicidad. Gracias por quererme del mismo modo que queréis a mis libros.

I had to wait one day to post the entry for two reasons: the first, I wanted to wait to have the photos that my dear Tamara made (I owe you so much!) And, second, I was and I am still somewhat overwhelmed.

I have no words to describe what I felt yesterday throughout the afternoon. I do not have holes in my chest to keep all the love I received from so many people. From the wonderful introduction of the wonderful Carmen Guaita «Jorge is a poet», the «why are you such a good teacher?» from one of my students to the precious words that the mother of another of them dedicated to me «the luck that we have to have you as a teacher of our children is immense» going through all the comments of many of those who accompanied me came very deep and made me more and more sure of how lucky I am to be able to dedicate myself to work for and with children.

I have been told by some of the people who have been in the presentations of my three books that this has been the one they liked the most, and I think it is because it was a very real act, very sincere and very emotional. Once again, I tried not to cry, but it was impossible for me, although being able to keep moving with moments like the one I lived yesterday fills me with satisfaction and joy.

I do not want to say much more. I just want to thank once again all of you who continue to support me book after book. You are my strength and my happiness. Thank you for loving me the way you want my books.

La entrada de hoy es para compartir con vosotros una sorpresa. Como sabéis, dentro de no demasiado saldrá mi tercer libro «Un corazón para Opalina y otros cuentos fantabulosos» y tengo que deciros que esta nueva criatura llega con un pan bajo el brazo.

Tengo la inmensa suerte de conocer a esta pedazo de actriz y mejor persona que es Miriam Díaz Aroca y hoy me (nos) ha prestado su voz para uno de mis nuevos cuentos. ¡Ha sido una pasada!

Hay que esperar a editar el audio, pero ya os adelanto que le ha quedado precioso y que os va a encantar tanto como a mí. Y, por si os lo preguntáis, sí: hay más voces preparadas para grabar el resto de los cuentos…

¿Veis a Miriam de hada? ¿De unicornio? ¿De sirena? Espero no tardar mucho en poder desvelarlo… 😉

Today’s post is a surprise for you. As you all know, my next book «A heart for Opalina and other fantabulous stories» is coming in not so much time and I have to tell you that it comes with a wonderful present.

I’ve got the pleasure of knowing the amazing actress Miriam Díaz Aroca and today she has lend me (us) her voice for one of my tales. It has been lush!

We need to wait to get the audio ready but I assure you that the result will be stunning and that you are going to love it as much as I do. And, just in case you are wondering so, yes: there are more voices ready to record the rest of the stories…

Do you imagine Miriam as a fairy? As a unicorn? As a mermaid? I hope you don’t have to wait much to know it…

Conectando tras la desconexión/ Re-connecting since the disconnection

Pues sí. Una vez más, he dejado el blog abandonado más tiempo del que debía y os pido perdón por eso. Sin que sea excusa, llevo unos meses bastante liado entre unas cosas y otras y he tenido que “desconectar” un poco de algunas obligaciones, pero ya estoy de vuelta y, en esta entrada, os cuentos cómo va todo lo relacionado con mi vida como profe y como escritor.

Ya tengo un puesto indefinido en el colegio donde estuve sustituyendo el curso pasado. Soy tutor de un 2º de primaria y tengo muchas clases también en un 1º, todo en inglés. La verdad es que estoy encantado con los dos grupos. Sabéis que los peques me gustan mucho, pero es que, además, he tenido mucha suerte y son dos grupos maravillosos.

Sin pensar en fechas (aprendí a hacerlo a la fuerza), dentro de poco tendré (y tendréis) en las manos mi siguiente libro: “Un corazón para Opalina y otros cuentos fantabulosos”.

Ayer mismo retomé la escritura de la segunda parte de “El destino de Tamarán”. Ya he superado las cien páginas y, aunque necesito volver a formar parte de ese mundo para dar pasos más firmes, estoy muy contento con cómo va avanzando.

Tengo por ahí otras cosillas moviéndose, algunos proyectos más empezados, otros casi terminados… Pero, de todo eso, os hablaré cuando sean realidades.

Well, it’s been quite a long time since my last post, so I apologize for that. Without being an excuse, I’ve been quite busy and I needed to “disconnect” a bit from my obligations, but now I am back and, in this post, I will tell you about everything in relation with my life as a teacher and as an author.

I’ve got a permanent job in the school where I was covering last year. I am the tutor of a second year in primary and I also teach in first year, everything in English. If I am honest I am very happy with both of them. You all know I love children but, furthermore, I’ve been lucky and the two groups are wonderful.

Without thinking of dates (I learnt not to do it), son I’ll have (and so will you) my next book: “A heart for Opalina and other fantabulous stories”.

I could re-start writing yesterday, so the second part of “The destiny of Tamaran” has already more than a hundred pages. I still need to be a part of Tamaran again to walk faster, but I am happy with it so far.

I’ve got more stuff moving around, some projects that I have already started, some others which I’ve finished… But I will tell you about all that when they become true.

I’ll keep you updated!

¡Nuevo libro!/ New book!

Nueva temporada también en el blog y vengo con noticias muy buenas.

El viernes desayuné con Diego Iturriaga, esa persona que ha hecho realidad uno de mis sueños más ansiados: publicar un libro. Y no solo uno. Como sabéis, me publicó “Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados” y “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos”. Si todo sale bien, a Tamarán le seguirán otros dos libros (ya sabéis que estoy escribiendo la segunda parte). Y el viernes me confirmó que me publica otro libro más. ¡Diego, eres el mejor editor del mundo! Gracias por tratarme tan bien y por seguir confiando en mí, casi a ciegas.

Se trata de otro libro de cuentos, en la línea de Lina, pero con criaturas fantásticas. No quiero desvelaros mucho. Serán otros seis cuentos que tratan otro tipo de temas y que llevará por título “Un corazón para Opalina y otros cuentos fantabulosos”. Como siempre, con las ilustraciones de mi Marta Marbán de Frutos, que son una maravilla.

De momento os lanzo una pregunta: ¿Qué criatura creéis que es Opalina?

Entre esas criaturas que ya “existen”, he incluido a unos personajillos que me he inventado… Esta es la ilustración, ¿os animáis a decirme cómo los llamaríais vosotros y qué peculiaridades tienen?

New season also in the blog and I have some good news.

Last Friday I had breakfast with Diego Iturriaga, the man who made one of my dearest dreams come true: publishing a book. And not only one. As you know, I published “Lina’s scarves and other animalated tales” with him and also “The destiny of Tamaran: The incognito kingdoms”. If everything works, Tamaran will be followed by two more books (you know I’m already writing the second part). Last Friday he confirmed that he we are going to publish one more book. Diego, you are the best editor ever! Thanks so much for treating me so well and for trust me almost blindly.

It is another children’s book with six more tales, but this time you will meet fantastic creatures instead of animals. The title will be “A heart for Opalina and other fantabulous tales”. As always, Marta Marbán de Frutos will take charge of the illustrations.

I want to ask you a question: What creature do you think Opalina is?

Among all the “real” creatures, there are some characters that I have invented… This is the illustration of one of them, will you try to tell me what you think his name is and what his peculiarity is?

Mis primeros ilustradores/ My first illustrators

A la espera de que “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos” llegue a mis manos y a las vuestras (ya me han dicho que está en proceso de maquetación), le debo esta entrada a mis alumnos.

Hoy les he leído un cuento mío inédito que irá incluido en el segundo libro de cuentos que publique (si habéis visto el vídeo de la presentación de “Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados” sabréis que los cuentos tendrán como protagonistas a criaturas fantásticas y no a animales) y les he pedido que se conviertan en los primeros ilustradores.

Siempre intento que adquieran gusto por leer y me aprovecho un poco de ser escritor para encender en ellos esa llamita para que lean todo lo posible.

El resultado ha sido este que veis, ¡no han podido hacerlo mejor! Les he prometido que subiría los que mejor quedaran, y aquí lo tenéis. Espero que os gusten tanto como a mí.

Still waiting for my new book to get published (I’ve been told they are already editing it), I owe this post to my students.

Today I have told them a tale written by myself that will be one of the six stories included in my second children book (with fantastic creatures as their protagonists) and I have asked them to be the first illustrators.

I always try to instil them the taste for reading and I take my author position in advantage to light a small flame in them and try to make them read as much as they can.

This is the result; they’ve done it fantastically! I have promised them that I was going to upload the best ones to my blog, so here you go. I hope you’ll like them as much as I do.

Editoriales/ Publishing houses

No voy a contar más sobre las veces que hay que revisar, corregir, re-revisar y re-corregir. Si habéis seguido más o menos los pasos necesarios, habréis llegado a tener un manuscrito aceptable (¡hurra!).

¿Cómo se lo envío a las editoriales? Con cautela y con cabeza.

No todas las editoriales reciben manuscritos de todos los géneros. Si vuestro libro es, como supongo, infantil o juvenil, dedicad algo de tiempo a ver qué editoriales los publican. Id a una librería y ojead.

Cada editorial pone sus normas. Algunas aceptan e-mails, otras lo piden impreso. Algunas piden también una breve ficha con tu información y con una sinopsis o presentación de tu obra. Otras, directamente, no aceptan envíos. Visitad sus páginas.

Las editoriales reciben miles de manuscritos, así que sed escuetos, directos y, sobre todo, atractivos, diferentes, llamad su atención.

Es un trabajo durísimo, especialmente si no has publicado nada aún y no tienes miles de seguidores en tus redes. Yo tuve la suerte de que una editorial como Endymion se decidiera a apostar por mí y estoy encantado con ellos y muy agradecido. Tanto que serán esa misma editorial, como sabéis, la que publicará “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos”.

Para este último paso, con el que ya termino esta serie de entradas, os deseo mucho ánimo y os animo a que no paréis de llamar a puertas hasta que os abran alguna, ¡merecerá la pena!

I am not going to repeat how many times you will need to revise, correct, re-revise and re-correct. If you have, more or less, followed the necessary steps, you may have an acceptable manuscript (hurray!).

How do I send it to the publishing houses? With caution and head.

Not every publishing house receive any kind of genre manuscripts. If your book is, as I understand, for children or young, take some time to see which ones publish these kind of books. Go to a bookshop and take a look.

Every publishing house has its own rules. Some accept e-mails, some want it printed. Some also want some information about you or your book. Others just don’t accept manuscripts. Go to their webs and spy a bit.

The publishing houses receive thousands of manuscripts, so be brief, go straight to the point and be attractive, different, try to catch their attention.

It is a very hard work, specially if you haven’t published anything yet and you haven’t got thousands of followers on your networks. I was very lucky and Endymion believed in me and my book and I am very pleased and thankful with them. Actually, as you know, they will publish my next book: “The destiny of Tamarán: The incognito kingdoms”.

For this last step, the one I finish this series of posts with, I encourage you not to surrender and keep knocking on every door you find until one of them opens for you, it will worth it!

Noticias importantes/ Important news

Hago un breve paréntesis en medio de la serie de entradas sobre el proceso desde que se tiene la idea hasta que se publica el libro para contaros una noticia muy importante.

Mañana, lunes, empiezo a trabajar en un colegio nuevo. Intenté de todas las formas posibles recibir un salario justo (sí, justo, porque cobrar 300€ menos que el resto de tus compañeros no lo es), tener un contrato por lo concertado y no por lo privado, pero no ha habido manera.

No quiero entrar en detalles negativos ni hablar de ciertas personas que ni merecen la pena ser nombradas. Simplemente quiero tener palabras de agradecimiento a la inmensa mayoría de mis compañeros, geniales profesores y mejores personas aún; a mis niños, que son los niños más bonitos del mundo y que me han dado tanto cariño en este mes y pico que me han desbordado, ¡siempre os recordaré!; y a los papás y mamás, que me han dejado sin palabras con sus palabras hacia mí y mi trabajo y me consolaron el viernes cuando no pude retener más las lágrimas y me rompí delante de ellos.

This is a small break in the middle of the series of posts about the process from the idea until the book is published to tell you something very important.

Tomorrow, Monday, I start working in a new school. I tried and tried to receive a fair salary (yes, fair, because earning 300€ less tan the rest of my colleagues is not fair at all), but I have not had any choice to have it.

I don’t want to get into the negative aspects and I am not going to talk about some people who don’t deserve to be even mentioned. I just want to have thankful words to the most of my colleagues, brilliant teachers and amazing people; my children, the most beautiful children in the world, and all the love they have given me in just a month and a few days, I always remember you!; and the parents, you have left me speechless with your kind words to me and my way of teaching and thanks for consoling me last Friday when I couldn’t control my tears.

Regalo de navidad/ A present for Christmas

El pasado día 23 de diciembre me hicieron un regalazo de navidad. Gracias a un amigo, me ofrecieron realizar un cuentacuentos de algún cuento mío en el Hospital del Sureste, en Arganda del Rey, como parte de un evento para los niños hospitalizados y los hijos de los empleados. No pude decir que no.

Susana, mi socia en esto de contar historias, tampoco pudo resistirse cuando le propuse acompañarme, así que tuvimos que vernos para ver qué cuento contar y cómo hacerlo.

Viendo las posibilidades, decidimos que el cuento que más posibilidades nos ofrecía para contarlo de esa manera era el que da título al libro, “Las bufandas de Lina”.

Tras comprar varios artículos para disfrazarnos un poco y pasarme una semana entera haciendo mariposas de cartulina y flores de goma EVA, nos plantamos en un salón de actos lleno de peques ante los que dimos lo mejor de nosotros para hacer que pudieran pasar un buen rato (y, según nos dijeron, así fue).

No puedo compartir el vídeo con vosotros porque aparecen los niños, pero sí os dejo algunas fotos para que veáis cómo fue.

A ver si, con un poco de suerte, nos salen más cositas de estas porque nos lo pasamos GENIAL.

Last December, 23rd I received an amazing present for Christmas. Thanks to a good friend, I got offered to do a storytelling with one of my tales in a hospital in Arganda del Rey, as a part of an event for the hospitalised children and the staff ones. I couldn’t refuse it.

Susana, my partner when it0s about telling stories, couldn’t resist neither when I gave her the chance to join me, so we just had to meet up and decide which tale to tell and how.

Considering our options, we decided that tha story with more possibilities for us was the one than name the book “Lina’s scarves”.

After buying some dressing-up articles and spending a whole week cutting cardboard butterflies and foam flowers, we got into a completely crowded room full of children, so we had to gave our best just to make them happy (and, according to what we have been told, we did it).

I cannot share the video because the children are in it, but I can show you some pictures to let you know how it was.

Let’s see if, luckily, we can do it more often because we had an amazing time.

Bienvenidos/ Welcome

Bienvenidos de vuelta al blog después de unas largas vacaciones y, sobre todo, bienvenidos mis alumnos a un nuevo curso. Sí, habéis leído bien, “mis alumnos”, porque tengo trabajo en un cole y, la verdad, ha sido un golpe de suerte por el que estoy muy, muy contento.

Es un segundo de primaria con veintisiete monstruitos un poco charlatanes pero con muchas posibilidades. De momento, me ha tocado ponerme el disfraz de ogro (lo sé, no me pega mucho), pero estoy seguro de que es un grupo que va a trabajar muy bien.

Soy su tutor, les doy lengua, naturales, sociales e inglés y, además, doy el inglés de los otros dos segundos.

Del libro tengo mucho, mucho, mucho que contaros, pero creo que esta es la noticia más apropiada para empezar este nuevo curso.

Welcome back to the blog after a long period of holidays and, above all, welcome my students to a new scholar year. Yes, you have read it properly, “my students”, because I have a job in a primary school and, to be honest, it is been a stroke of luck that has made me very, very happy.

It is a Year two group with twenty-seven little monsters a little bit chatty but with a lot of opportunities. By now, I need to wear an ogre fancy dress (I know, it doesn’t fit me much), but I am sure they will work very well in the near future.

I am their tutor, I teach them Spanish, Science, Social Studies and English and I also teach English to the other two groups at this year.

I have so, so, so much to tell you about the book, but I think this is the most appropriated new to start this new “year”.
