Mis primeros ilustradores/ My first illustrators

A la espera de que “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos” llegue a mis manos y a las vuestras (ya me han dicho que está en proceso de maquetación), le debo esta entrada a mis alumnos.

Hoy les he leído un cuento mío inédito que irá incluido en el segundo libro de cuentos que publique (si habéis visto el vídeo de la presentación de “Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados” sabréis que los cuentos tendrán como protagonistas a criaturas fantásticas y no a animales) y les he pedido que se conviertan en los primeros ilustradores.

Siempre intento que adquieran gusto por leer y me aprovecho un poco de ser escritor para encender en ellos esa llamita para que lean todo lo posible.

El resultado ha sido este que veis, ¡no han podido hacerlo mejor! Les he prometido que subiría los que mejor quedaran, y aquí lo tenéis. Espero que os gusten tanto como a mí.

Still waiting for my new book to get published (I’ve been told they are already editing it), I owe this post to my students.

Today I have told them a tale written by myself that will be one of the six stories included in my second children book (with fantastic creatures as their protagonists) and I have asked them to be the first illustrators.

I always try to instil them the taste for reading and I take my author position in advantage to light a small flame in them and try to make them read as much as they can.

This is the result; they’ve done it fantastically! I have promised them that I was going to upload the best ones to my blog, so here you go. I hope you’ll like them as much as I do.

Correctores/ Correctors

Después de tu revisión, con sus pertinentes correcciones, podrás decir que tienes un borrador listo para el siguiente paso. ¿Cuál es? ¿Lo envío ya a las editoriales? Podrías hacerlo sí, pero mi consejo es otro.

Los que somos escritores primerizos tenemos que ser conscientes de que somos nuevos en esto de la literatura. Hemos podido leer muchísimo, haber hecho cursos de escritura creativa, haber consulado miles de manuales… Pero somos nuevos.

Pensad en que salís de la universidad y empezáis en un nuevo empleo. ¿Alguien ha podido ponerse a trabajar sin más? A mí, honestamente, no. Han tenido que enseñarme los que llevaban más tiempo en ese empleo, me han tutorizado y enseñado hasta que, en algún momento, he adquirido los mecanismos necesarios para no necesitar más tutela. Con lo de escribir sucede algo parecido. Por muy bien que pensemos que está nuestro libro, es prácticamente imposible que no hayamos caído en errores “típicos de principiantes”, ¡y es algo normal! Entonces, ¿qué hago?

Podría poneros una lista inmensa de profesionales que se ofrecen a corregir vuestros textos, pero os aburriría. Echad un ojo por Internet. Seguro que hay correctores que se adecúan al tipo de historia que habéis escrito. En mi caso, como escribo fantasía, os puedo hablar de la genial Ana González Duque y, de paso, invitaros a su blog y a su canal de youtube. Aprenderéis muchísimo acerca de cómo escribir fantasía (y cómo no hacerlo).

Seguro que vuestro libro gana y que las editoriales, cuando enviéis el texto, lo miran con mejores ojos.

After your revision, with its corrections, you can say you have a draft ready for the next step. What is it? Do I send it to the publishing houses yet? You could do it, but here you have my advice.

Us, unexperienced authors, have to know that we are beginners in literature. We could’ve read a lot, could’ve attended many creative writing workshops, could’ve consulted plenty manuals…  But we are still unexperienced.

Think about finishing university and start working in a new job. Has anyone started doing everything by him/ herself? Being honest, not me. Someone has had to teach me until, at some point, I have achieved the necessary mechanics to stop needing a mentor. With writing is more or less the same thing. Even if we think our book is perfect, it is quite impossible that we haven’t made any “beginner mistakes”, and it is normal!

So, what do I do, then? I could write down a lot of professional correctors that will help you with your texts, but it will be boring. Take a look on the Internet. You will find different corrector specialized in different kind of genre. In my case, as I write fantasy, I can tell you about the amazing Ana González Duque and, plus, invite you all to her blog and youtube channel. You will learn so much about how to write fantasy (and how not to write it).

¡He terminado el primer borrador!/ I have finished the first draft!

Después de poco (o mucho) tiempo, ya has puesto punto y final a tu libro. ¡Enhorabuena! Y, también, mis condolencias. “¿Por qué, si ya he terminado?” Siento deciros que no, que no habéis terminado ni mucho menos. Es más, os queda la que es (al menos para mí) la peor parte: las revisiones y/ o correcciones.

Antes, como una recomendación, os digo que no os lancéis a revisar nada más terminarlo, especialmente si es un escrito largo. Dejadlo reposar y, sobre todo, dejad que vuestras neuronas reposen. Mientras, podéis seleccionar a algunas víctimas que lean vuestra historia y que hagan de un primer filtro. Podrán apuntar errores que encuentren, haceros preguntas o comentarios que os ayuden a cambiar algunas partes o que, simplemente, os digan qué les parece. Con todo eso, os será mucho más fácil volver a sentaros al teclado.

After a bit (or a lot) of time, you’ve written the final dot in your book. Congratulations! And, also, my comdolences. «Why? I’ve said I have finished!» I am afraid to tell you that you haven´t, you haven´t finished at all. Furthermore, you still have to do the (unless for me) worst part: revision and/ or correction.

Before so, as a recommendation, I ask you not to start right after you have finished. give it a rest and, more important, give your neurons a rest. In the meantime, you can select some victims to read your story and to be the first filter. They can spot some mistakes, make you some comments or questions that will help you to change some parts or, simply, they can tell you what they think about it. With all that, it will be much easier to come back to the keyboard.

Cuando se trata de arte/ When it’s all about art

Sí, me gusta el arte, en prácticamente todas sus vertientes y, por suerte, Londres es una ciudad donde el arte se encuentra en cada esquina. Siempre pasa de todo: exposiciones, obras de teatro, conciertos y… Musicales. Me encantan los musicales. Mezclar el teatro con la música es una de las ideas más brillantes que la humanidad ha tenido, así que, cuando puedo, intento colarme en alguno.

El último que he visto es Miss Saigon, una historia ambientada en la Guerra del Vietnam con los ingredientes que os imaginaréis. Soldados americanos. Chicas vietnamitas que quieren abandonar su país en brazos de algún militar. Celos. Lágrimas. Y canciones. Canciones genialmente interpretadas por todos los actores.

Quizás es mi opinión, pero creo que cuando una ciudad ofrece una variedad tan amplia de eventos culturales, se convierte inmediatamente en una ciudad mejor. Sin ninguna duda, es una de las cosas que más me gustan de estar viviendo aquí.

Y el siguiente será… ¿Matilda? ¿Billy Elliot? ¿Charlie y la fábrica de chocolate? Os mantendré informados…

Yes, I like art, no matter the discipline and, good for me, London is a city where art is everywhere. There is always something going on: exhibitions, theatre plays, concerts and… Musicals. I love musicals. Putting together theatre and music is been one of the smartest ideas of humanity so, every time I can, I book a ticket.

The last one I’ve seen is Miss Saigon, a story that happens in Vietnam War, with the ingredients that you would guess. American soldiers. Vietnamese girls that want to run away from their country in the Americans arms. Jealousy. Tears. And songs. Songs perfectly performed by all of the actors.

Maybe it is my opinion, but I think that, when a city offers such a huge variety of cultural events, it immediately becomes a better city. Without any doubt, it is one of the things that I like the most of living here.

And the next one will be… Matilda? Billy Elliot? Charlie and the chocolate factory? I’ll keep you updated…

Virginia Woolf

Aprovechando mi tiempo en Londres, el viernes pasado fui a ver una exposición sobre la vida de Virginia Woolf en la National Portrait Gallery, y no me pudo gustar más. Vi manuscritos de su puño y letra, cartas dirigidas a sus amigos, a su marido, a sus familiares… Primeras ediciones, algunas ilustradas por su propia hermana, Vanessa Bell. El bastón con el que caminaba. La carta con la que se despide de su marido, Leonard Woolf, antes de suicidarse. Esa carta. ¿Existe en el mundo literario una carta más bonita que esa? ¿Cómo alguien que se va a quitar la vida puede escribir una carta de amor con esa sensibilidad? Supongo que la razón es simple, porque Virginia Woolf era un genio, una mente brillante aunque nublada por la locura. Una escritora con mayúsculas que, con todo el merecimiento, ocupa un lugar muy importante en la literatura universal.

Cuando se habla de Virginia Woolf, el mundo se detiene. ¿Qué tuvo esta mujer que tanto me encandila? Todo, supongo. Dejemos de lado todo lo que fue para centrarnos en la maravillosa escritora que fue. Orlando, Una habitación propia, Las olas, El faro y… Y… La Señora Dalloway. Qué maravilla de libro. Mi libro preferido desde que lo leí por primera vez. Algunas personas me preguntan sobre qué trata, y mi respuesta siempre es la misma: lo importante no es sobre qué trata, sino cómo está escrito. El argumento es sencillo, trata sobre la vida de la Señora Dalloway, contada en un solo día. «La vida de una mujer en un día y, en un solo día, toda su vida». Uff, es que era capaz de escoger cada palabra, la más apropiada, es como una poesía inmensa contada en prosa. Se me ponen los pelos de punta solo de leerla.

Si no habéis leído nada suyo, os animo a hacerlo. Y, para aquellos que queráis acercaros un poco más a su vida y a ese libro tan precioso del que hablo, os recomiendo que veáis mi película favorita: Las horas. Y preparaos para disfrutar…

Taking advantage of living in London, last Friday I went to watch an exhibition about Virginia Woolf’s life at the National Portrait Gallery, and it was simply amazing. I saw some of her own handwritings, letters from her to her friends, her husband and her family… First editions, some of them illustrated by her sister, Vanessa Bell. The walking stick she used. The letter where she said goodbye to her husband, Leonard Woolf, before committing suicide. That letter. Does it exist in the whole world a more beautiful letter than that? How someone that is about to kill herself is able to write such a touching love letter? The answer is simple, I guess. Virginia Woolf was a genius, a bright mind even if obscured with her own madness. A writer with capital letters that, deserving so and more, occupies a very important place in universal literature.

When someone is talking about Virginia Woolf, the world stops. What did this woman have that is so charming? Everything, I suppose. Let’s forget about all the things she did to focus on the amazing writing that she was. Orlando, A room of one’s own, The waves, To the lighthouse and… And… Miss Dalloway. Such a marvelous book. Mi favourite book since I first read it. Some people ask me what is it about, and my answer is always the same one: what really matters is not what it is about, but the way it is written. The plot is easy, it is about Miss Dalloway’s life, told in one day. “A woman’s whole life in a single day. Just one day. And in that day her whole life”. Wow. She could choose the right Word, the most appropriated one, it is like a huge poem told in prose. I just get goose bumps every time I read her.

If you haven’t read any book by her, I encourage you to do so. And, for those that feel like getting closer to her life and to that incredible book, plase watch my favourite movie: The hours. And get ready to enjoy yourselves…
