Mi primera reunión con mi editor/ My first meeting with my editor

Algunas personas tiran la toalla después de un fracaso. Se rinden. Prefieren dedicar su tiempo a otra cosa. Por suerte o por desgracia, yo no me encuentro entre esas personas. Yo aprendo. Lucho. Puedo caerme, pero siempre me levanto.

El sábado pasado, día 9 de mayo, me reuní con Diego Iturriaga, mi primer editor, quien sí va a apostar por mí y por mi libro, y me dio su palabra de que “Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados” va a ver la luz muy, muy pronto. Su editorial se llama “Endymion” .Gracias, Diego, de corazón.

No había lugar más apropiado que la Biblioteca Británica 🙂

La cuenta atrás ya ha comenzado… Os seguiré contando.

Last Saturday, May 9th, I had my first meeting with Diego Iturriaga, my first editor, and he is going to bet for me and for my book, and he gave my his word: “Lina’s scarves and other animalated tales” is going to see the light very soon. His publishing house is called “Endymion”. Thanks, Diego, from the bottom of my heart.

There was not a more appropiated location than the British Library 🙂

Voy a ser muy, muy breve con esta entrada… Solo quiero deciros a todos y a todas los que estáis ahí que (como dice el título), por fin (por fin, por fin)… ¡Me van a publicar! No voy a dar más información básicamente porque no la tengo, pero es firme y en una o dos semanas me reúno con mi editor. Lo único que puedo deciros es que va a ser el libro de «Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados» y daros un millón de gracias por todo el apoyo que me habéis dado siempre.

I am going to be very, very quick with this post… I just want to tell all of you that (as the title says), at last (at last, at last)… I am going to get published! I am not going to give you more information basically because I don’t have it, but is firm and in one or two weeks I will have a meeting with my editor. The only thing I can tell you is that it is going to be «Lina’s scarves and other animalated tales», and thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the support you have always given me.

Un equipo que acaba de empezar/ A team that has just started

Ya la conocéis. Os he hablado de ella varias veces, incluso en la última entrada. Es Alicia Roy. Y desde hace un tiempo, somos pareja. Noooo, no pareja sentimental, sino profesional. Desde que trabajamos juntos por primera vez, supe que nuestra relación duraría mucho, mucho tiempo.

No es solo que sea una maravillosa artista, sino que entiende mis palabras a la perfección. Estoy deseando que todos podáis ver el resultado, porque estoy seguro de que no va a dejar a nadie indiferente. Por eso, estamos ya metidos en dos proyectos juntos. Uno que ya conocéis y otro en el que acabamos de embarcarnos y del que ya os hablaré cuando corresponda.

You know her already. I have written about her in several occasions, including last week. I am talking about Alicia Roy. And I have to tell you that, since some time, we are a couple. Noooo, not a sentimental couple, but a professional one. Since we first worked together, I knew our relationship was going to last a lot of time.

It is not just that she is a wonderful artist, but she also understands my words perfectly. I can’t wait for you to see the result, because I am sure that nobody will remain indifferent. Because of that, we are involved in two projects together. You know one of them already, and I will tell you about the other one when it comes to that.

La persona adecuada/ The right person

Una de mis mayores suertes es estar rodeado de personas maravillosas. Algunas de esas personas, además, son unas artistas de los pies a la cabeza.

Ya os hablé de Marta Marbán, la ilustradora de mis cuentos infantiles en esta otra entrada “Esa otra mitad”, y también os introduje a Alicia Roy en “A la sombra de un gigante”, así que ya sabéis cómo es estilo de cada una y lo precioso que dibujan.

Esta entrada es para darle las gracias a varias personas. En primer lugar, a Alicia Roy porque, una vez más, me ha dejado con la boca abierta ilustrando otro de mis relatos. En segundo, a mis amigos, Mónica, Sandra y Nico, por haber hecho posible que mi madre fuera inmensamente feliz en su cumple. Y, por supuesto, a mi madre, mis abuelas y a personas como la propia Mónica, Hilario o mi prima Merce, por haberme inspirado tanto y por formar parte de esta historia. Espero que todos podáis leerla pronto.

One of my biggest lucks is being surrounded by wonderful people. Some of them are, also, are artists from head to toe.

I introduced you to Marta Marbán, my illustrator for my tales, whose drawings are in more than one post, and I also mentioned Alicia Roy in “In the shadow of a giant”, so you already know their styles and how beautifully they draw.

This post is to say thanks to some people. First of all, to Alica Roy because, once again, she has left me open-mouthed illustrating another story written by myself. Second, to my friends Mónica, Sandra and Nico, for making my mum so happy on his birthday. And, of course, to my mum, my grandmothers, Mónica herself, Hilario or my cousin Merce, because they have inspired me so much and they are a part of the story themselves. I hope you can read it soon.

¿De dónde vienen las ideas?/ Where do the ideas come from?

A veces me preguntan que cómo se me ha ocurrido escribir las historias que escribo, cuál ha sido la razón para escribir un determinado texto.

¿De dónde sacas las ideas? Pues, a veces, se me ocurre una sola frase y la dejo reposar hasta que encuentro cómo incluirla en una historia. Otras veces es un personaje. O un diálogo. O una imagen. Hay poemas que he escrito a partir de un solo verso. Novelas que salen de un sueño. Cuentos que aparecen gracias a un peluche.

Lo importante es tener los ojos y los oídos bien abiertos para empaparse de todo lo que ocurre a nuestro alrededor. Cualquier detalle puede ser el inicio de una buena historia.

Sometimes people ask me how I can write the stories that I write, what was the reason to write a specific text.

Where do you get the ideas from? Well, sometimes, it is just one sentence that I let there until I find how to include it in a story. Other times it is a character. A dialogue. Or an image. I have written some poems from a single verse. Novels that start with a dream. Tales that appear thanks to a soft toy.

The most important thing is to keep eyes and ears wide open so we can absorb everything that is surrounding us. Any detail could be the beginning of a nice story.

A por el final/ Towards the end

Esta va a ser una entrada breve, que tengo que aprovechar el tiempo libre (al que suelo echar bastante de menos normalmente) y que la inspiración sigue conmigo.

Ya solo me queda escribir el desenlace de la historia en la que estoy trabajando. Bueno, digamos, la historia más larga en la que estoy metido, aquella en la que ya os hablé aquí: Un año nuevo empieza/ A new year starts. Llevo escribiéndola prácticamente desde finales de la primavera del año pasado, y creo que va bastante bien encaminada. De momento, van treinta capítulos repartidos en ciento veintidós páginas. Siempre acabo rompiendo los cálculos que hago, pero, según creo, en unos cinco o diez capítulos máximo habré terminado. Entonces, será el tiempo de la revisión, proceso del que ya os hablé aquí El proceso de revisión.

Así que nada, os dejo para seguir escribiendo, os seguiré contando… 😉

This one is going to be a short post, as I have to take the so missed free time into advantage, as well as the inspiration that still holds my hand.

I just have to write the ending of the storu I am working on now. Well, let’s say the longest story I am involved with at the moment, the one I talk to you about here: Un año nuevo empieza/ A new year starts. I have been working on it since the end of last spring, and I think it is quite well organised now. It has thirty chapters divided in one hundred and twenty two pages so far. I always end up breaking the predictions I make, but I think I will finish with five to ten chapters more. Then, it will come the time for te revision.

So, I leave you for now, as I have to write, I’ll keep you updated… 😉

Algo necesario es las escuelas/ Something necessary in schools

Esta mañana he tenido la inmensa suerte de poder estar presente en la charla que el escritor Tony Lee ha dado en mi instituto. No ha ido por dinero. No ha ido a vender sus libros. Ni siquiera a hablar de ellos. Ha ido solamente para motivar a los chicos a leer, y lo ha hecho con un discurso tan divertido como maravilloso. Ha conseguido que todos estuvieran pendientes, en silencio, interesados en cada palabra que decía, en cada gesto que hacía. Y, del mismo modo, yo he guardado silencio absoluto, he escuchado el discurso con toda mi atención, lo he disfrutado al máximo y, sobre todo, he aprendido.

He aprendido que, cuando se trata de animar a leer, cualquier otro propósito está de más. Olvidémonos de las ventas. Olvidémonos de la fama. Olvidémonos de firmar libros. Olvidemos todo lo demás y centrémonos en lo que realmente importa: que los niños puedan ver los beneficios de la lectura, que se interesen por ella, que no se pierdan disfrutar de un buen libro.

A eso ha venido, y creo que lo ha conseguido con creces. Y he pensado en lo poco que este tipo de actos se hace en los centros españoles. Quizás pensemos que la lectura no es importante. Quizás, también, falten autores como Tony Lee, tan solo interesados en encender la chispa necesaria para que algunos chicos a los que no les gusta leer, busquen un libro y se pierdan entre sus páginas. This morning I have had the pleasure of assisting author Tony Lee’s speech at my school. He didn’t come for the money. He didn’t come to sell his books. He has not even mentioned them. He has just come for motivating the students to read more, and he has done it with a speech as funny as wonderful. He has made possible that every single child was listening carefully, in silence, interested in every word he was saying, in every gesture he made. And, in the same way, I have kept absolute silent, I have listened to the speech with all my attention, I have enjoyed it and, overall, I have learnt.

I have learnt that, when it is about encouraging people to read, any other purpose is not worth it. Let’s forget about selling books. Let’s forget about fame. Let’s forget about dedicating books. Let’s forget about the rest and let’s focus on what really matters: letting children know how nice reading is, making them interested on it, telling them that they cannot miss the chance of reading a good book.

He has come just for that and he has made it possible in a lovely way. Then, I have thought that this kind of events do not happen often in Spanish schools. Maybe we think reading is not important. Maybe, also, we miss some authors like Tony Lee, only interested on encouraging children to read, to look for a book and get lost in its pages. Thanks, Tony.

Empieza un nuevo año/ A new year starts

Después de unas semanitas de vacaciones en mi adorada Madrid, ya he vuelto a Londres y a mis rutinas, lo que incluye retomar el blog.

Quiero aprovechar esta entrada, la primera de este año, para contaros los planes que tengo para este 2015.

  • Trabajo: si mis planes salen como espero, estaré en Londres hasta finales agosto. Ya os contaré más detalles en otra entrada, porque hay algunos proyectos en el aire que pueden salir o no. Después de eso, espero poder volver a Madrid.
  • Libros: acabo de terminar una historia breve en la misma línea de “A la sombra de un gigante” y ya está en manos de la genial Alicia Roy para que le dé vida. También estoy escribiendo el desenlace de una novela que empecé el verano pasado y que espero terminar en no más de un par de meses. Después de eso, tendré que decidir con qué sigo…

  • Publicaciones: en contacto aún con editoriales, desde luego, la crisis que aún hay en España no es el mejor panorama para un escritor primerizo. Aun así, no desisto y sigo intentándolo con todas mis fuerzas. Tengo buenas sensaciones para este año, espero que se cumplan.

Y creo que eso es todo. Tendréis que estar pendientes del blog para saber si cierro proyectos o no…

After some weeks of holidays in my dear Madrid, I have come back to London and to my routines, including the blog.

I want to take this post into advantage to tell you about my plans for this 2015.

  • Work: if my plans go as I hope, I will be in London until the end of August. I will give you more details in another post, as there are some projects that can happen or not. After that, I hope I can come back to Madrid.
  • Books: I have just finished writing a short story in the same line as “In the shadow of a giant”, and the brilliant Alicia Roy is taking a look at it to make it come to life. I am also writing the end of a novel that I have started last summer and I hope I’ll finish it in a couple of months. Then, I will have to decide what will be the next…

  • Publications: still in contact with some publishing houses, the crisis we have in Spain is not the best scenario for a “rookie”. However, I don’t give up and I keep trying as hard as I can. I have good feelings for this new year, I just hope I am right.

And I think that’s all for now. You will have to keep an eye on the blog to know if I get some projects…

Hablar de literatura/ To talk about literatura

Es raro encontrar a personas con las que hablar de literatura, ¿verdad? En una de mis entradas antiguas hice referencia a lo poco “cool” que era confesar que se lee (Leer es algo que se hace cuando no quieres estar aburrido), y creo que sacar la conversación sobre la literatura lo es aún menos si cabe… ¿Por qué creéis que esto ocurre?

Puede que tengamos en mente que hablar de literatura signifique desempolvar a los clásicos y tener una conversación aburrida y soporífera en la que hay que demostrar que se ha leído más a García Márquez, Cervantes, Shakespeare o a Dostoievski que el otro, pero no tiene por qué ser así. ¿Qué pasa con las conversaciones sobre libros infantiles? ¿O con las charlas entorno a sagas juveniles como Harry Potter o Crepúsculo? No debemos olvidar que todos estos mundos también forman parte de la literatura, y que no hay que estar en el Café Gijón para hablar sobre ellos.

Por eso es tan grato cuando, a quienes nos gusta leer, se nos aparece una persona con la que poder compartir opiniones sobre los libros que hemos leído, hacer y recibir recomendaciones… No dejemos que por literatura se entienda aburrimiento o pedantería. ¡Hablemos sobre ella!

It is very weird to find people with whom talk about literature, isn’t it? In one of my posts I talked about how confessing that you like reading was not really cool, and I think that talking about literature is even worst in terms of popularity, if that is possible… What is your opinion?

 

Maybe we have in mind that talking about literature means to remove the dust off the classics and to have a boring conversation where you should demonstrate that you have read more García Márquez, Cervantes, Shakespeare or Dostoievsky’s books than the other person, but it doesn’t have to be like this. What happens with the conversations about children’s books? Or about sagas for teenagers like Harry Potter or Twilight? We shouldn’t forget that all these universes are also a part of literature and that you don’t have to be in Bloomsbury to talk about them.

That’s why it is so pleasant to meet a person who you can talk about literature with, share opinions about the books that you have read, give them and receive some recommendations… We mustn’t allow literature to be understood like boredom or pedantry. Let’s talk about literature!

Las ideas de los más pequeños/ The ideas of the little boys

Trabajar y tratar con niños durante tantos años tiene muchas ventajas, pero me voy a centrar en las que repercuten en mi faceta como escritor.

No he conocido a ningún niño al que no le guste leer y/ o que le lean, al menos entre los más pequeños, por lo que siempre son una buenísima opción para comprobar si los textos que he escrito para tal público son bien recibidos por ellos. De momento, según lo que he visto, creo que mis cuentos les gustarán.

Por otra parte, casi más importante, no puedo olvidarme de la imaginación tan inmensa que tienen. Son una fuente de inspiración increíble, siempre con ideas sobre animales capaces de correr cualquier aventura, lugares mágicos y personajes maravillosos.

Ya sabéis que uno de los cuentos de mi libro (seguimos a la espera de noticias…) está inspirado por Lucía, una de mis alumnas durante mis prácticas en el Colegio del Hospital del Niño Jesús, y ya voy teniendo más ocurrencias para futuras historias. Quién sabe, quizás algo relacionado con un tiburón para un niño muy, muy especial…

Working and dealing with children for so many years have a lot of advantages, but I am going to focus on those ones that have an effect on my writing side.

I haven’t met any child who doesn’t like reading and/ or being read, at least among the youngest ones, so they are always a nice option to test if the texts I write for them are going to be appropriated. For the time being, as I have checked, I think that they are going to like my tales.

On the other hand, and even more important, I can’t forget about the huge imagination that they have. They are an incredible inspirational source, always bringing new ideas about animals that can live any kind of adventure, magical places or fantasy characters.

As you know, one of the tales of my book (still waiting for some news, by the way…) was inspired by Lucía, one of my students during my teaching practice at the Hospital del Niño Jesús School, and I have some new ideas for future stories. Who knows, maybe something connected to a shark for a very, very special child…
