Nueva portada y algo de información/ New cover and some more information

Voy a ser muy, muy breve con esta entrada… Solo quiero deciros a todos y a todas los que estáis ahí que (como dice el título), por fin (por fin, por fin)… ¡Me van a publicar! No voy a dar más información básicamente porque no la tengo, pero es firme y en una o dos semanas me reúno con mi editor. Lo único que puedo deciros es que va a ser el libro de «Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados» y daros un millón de gracias por todo el apoyo que me habéis dado siempre.

I am going to be very, very quick with this post… I just want to tell all of you that (as the title says), at last (at last, at last)… I am going to get published! I am not going to give you more information basically because I don’t have it, but is firm and in one or two weeks I will have a meeting with my editor. The only thing I can tell you is that it is going to be «Lina’s scarves and other animalated tales», and thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the support you have always given me.

Educación, literatura y videoconferencia/ Education, literature and videoconference

Un nuevo autor ha venido hoy a mi instituto, y he vuelto a disfrutar de dos de mis mayores pasiones a la vez: la educación y la literatura. Además, también se ha unido la videoconferencia, así que esta entrada era obligatoria.

El autor ha sido Dan Freedman, escritor de varios libros relacionados con el fútbol. Quizás el fútbol no es precisamente un tema sobre el que yo escribiría, pero Dan ha dado una razón más que suficiente para hacerlo: el fútbol es su mayor pasión. Escribe sobre lo que le gusta, añadiendo vivencias propias y tratando temas tan actuales como el acoso escolar. Y parece que no le va mal del todo.

Me ha recordado un poco a la saga «Sara y las goleadoras«, de Laura Gallego. Unos libros que, sinceramente, no creo que lea, pero que están en las librerías españolas desde hace ya tiempo.

No obstante, dicen que de todo se aprende, ¿no? Por lo que pueda pasar, yo sigo apuntando ideas en mi libreta, para el día en que sean mis libros los que estén en las librerías y bibliotecas y sea yo el que vaya a dar charlas a centros escolares.

A new author has come to my school today, and I have enjoyed two of my passions at the same time again: education and literature. Also, videoconferencing is been envolved, so this post was something mandatory.

The author has been Dan Freedman, writer of some books related to football. Maybe football is not exactly a topic that I would write about, but Dan has given the right reason to do so: football is his biggest passion. He writes about what he likes, adding some of his own experiences and talking about issues as factual as bullying. And it seems he is doing pretty well.

It has reminded me of Laura Gallego‘s saga «Sara and the goal scorers«. A saga that, being honest, I don’t think I’ll read, but that you can find in Spanish book shops.

However, they say you can always learn something new, don’t they? Just in case, I keep writing down every idea in my notebook, so I can use them the day my books will be in book shops and libraries and I will be the one going to talk about them to different schools.

Creciendo profesionalmente/ Growing professionally

Tras haberos introducido el nuevo trabajo que empecé en septiembre (recordad esta entrada: “Mi nuevo trabajo”), puedo daros un poco más de información. Finalmente, después de mucho esfuerzo, nos hicimos con el proyecto final, y en abril empezaremos un nuevo curso con más clases y, por lo tanto, más niños y niñas en los que volcar nuestro saber y nuestro cariño a través de la pantalla. ¿Qué es exactamente lo que hacemos? Enseñar inglés a colegios de primaria en Uruguay a través de videoconferencia. Dicho de otra manera, nuestros alumnos están en distintos lugares de Uruguay y nosotros, desde Londres, les damos clases de inglés. Suena raro, lo sé, pero funciona. Estamos muy orgullosos de decir que nuestros alumnos han mejorado mucho y que, al menos yo, aprendo muchísimo día tras día. Ahora estamos frente al reto de afrontar un curso entero y, en mi caso, no solo como “profesor remoto”, que es como nos llaman, sino también como coordinador del proyecto, algo que llevo haciendo prácticamente desde que empecé. Lo cierto es que da gusto trabajar en lo que me gusta con un equipo tan maravilloso como el que tengo. Finally, after having told you a Little bit about the job I started in September (remember that post: “My new job”), I can give you some more details about it. After a lot of effort, we got the final project, so we will be starting a new year in April with more groups and, so, more students in which we’ll pour our knowledge and our love through a screen. What do we do, exactly? We teach English to primary schools in Uruguay through videoconference. In other words, our students are in several places in Uruguay and we, from London, teach them English. It sounds a bit weird, I know, but it works. We are very proud to say that our students have improved a lot and that I learn so many things day after day. Now we are going to face the challenge of teaching during a whole scholar year and, in my case, not only as a “remote teacher”, but also as the co-ordinator of the project, something that I have been doing since I started. The truth is that it is nice to work with such a wonderful team. For those who want to know a bit more about us, here you go the brand new website we have just made,  hope you like it!

Algo necesario es las escuelas/ Something necessary in schools

Esta mañana he tenido la inmensa suerte de poder estar presente en la charla que el escritor Tony Lee ha dado en mi instituto. No ha ido por dinero. No ha ido a vender sus libros. Ni siquiera a hablar de ellos. Ha ido solamente para motivar a los chicos a leer, y lo ha hecho con un discurso tan divertido como maravilloso. Ha conseguido que todos estuvieran pendientes, en silencio, interesados en cada palabra que decía, en cada gesto que hacía. Y, del mismo modo, yo he guardado silencio absoluto, he escuchado el discurso con toda mi atención, lo he disfrutado al máximo y, sobre todo, he aprendido.

He aprendido que, cuando se trata de animar a leer, cualquier otro propósito está de más. Olvidémonos de las ventas. Olvidémonos de la fama. Olvidémonos de firmar libros. Olvidemos todo lo demás y centrémonos en lo que realmente importa: que los niños puedan ver los beneficios de la lectura, que se interesen por ella, que no se pierdan disfrutar de un buen libro.

A eso ha venido, y creo que lo ha conseguido con creces. Y he pensado en lo poco que este tipo de actos se hace en los centros españoles. Quizás pensemos que la lectura no es importante. Quizás, también, falten autores como Tony Lee, tan solo interesados en encender la chispa necesaria para que algunos chicos a los que no les gusta leer, busquen un libro y se pierdan entre sus páginas. This morning I have had the pleasure of assisting author Tony Lee’s speech at my school. He didn’t come for the money. He didn’t come to sell his books. He has not even mentioned them. He has just come for motivating the students to read more, and he has done it with a speech as funny as wonderful. He has made possible that every single child was listening carefully, in silence, interested in every word he was saying, in every gesture he made. And, in the same way, I have kept absolute silent, I have listened to the speech with all my attention, I have enjoyed it and, overall, I have learnt.

I have learnt that, when it is about encouraging people to read, any other purpose is not worth it. Let’s forget about selling books. Let’s forget about fame. Let’s forget about dedicating books. Let’s forget about the rest and let’s focus on what really matters: letting children know how nice reading is, making them interested on it, telling them that they cannot miss the chance of reading a good book.

He has come just for that and he has made it possible in a lovely way. Then, I have thought that this kind of events do not happen often in Spanish schools. Maybe we think reading is not important. Maybe, also, we miss some authors like Tony Lee, only interested on encouraging children to read, to look for a book and get lost in its pages. Thanks, Tony.

Algo que echo mucho de menos/ Something that I miss a lot

No voy a decir que sea mejor ni peor, pero yo prefiero la forma de tratar a los alumnos que tenemos en España antes que la que tienen en el Reino Unido. Me explico: en Reino Unido prácticamente no se puede tocar a los alumnos por evitar problemas escabrosos que a mí, desde el tipo de persona que soy y desde mi experiencia trabajando con niños, me repugna al mismo tiempo que la encuentro incomprensible. Puedo comprenderlo. Sin embargo, en España ese trato es muy distinto, y no conozco muchos casos en los que esos problemas tan asquerosos sean habituales.

Todos los años que he trabajado como monitor de natación les he dado a los peques todo mi cariño, en palabras, en abrazos, en besos y en pellizcos en los mofletes. Jamás he tenido ninguna queja de los padres, todo lo contrario, siempre han agradecido que tratara a sus hijos de esa forma. En los periodos de prácticas ha pasado lo mismo. Sinceramente, eso me falta mucho en Inglaterra.

Vengo ahora mismo de hacer una visita a mis compañeras del Colegio de la Sagrada Familia, donde hice seis meses de prácticas, y he vuelto a recibir abrazos y besos de mis antiguos alumnos. Y he pensado lo mucho que echo de menos España y las ganas que tengo de trabajar en un cole de aquí, y eso que en Londres estoy encantado de la vida. Quizás en septiembre…

I am not going to say that it is better or worse, but I prefer the way we treat the students in Spain than the way they do it in the UK. I mean: in the UK you can’t touch the students in order to avoid scabrous problems that, for me, being the kind of person that I am and having worked with children for a long time, disgusts me even if I find it incomprehensible. I can understand that behaviour, though. However, in Spain that treatment is different, and I do not know many cases where those disgusting issues are something common.

All the years I have been working as a swimming instructor I have given my children all my love in words, hugs, kisses and pinches on their cheeks. I have never received any complaint from any parent, but I have received a lot of thankful words for treating their children in such a nice way, instead. The same thing happened during my teaching practices. Honestly, I miss this kind of things in England.

I just come from visiting my colleagues and my children at the Sagrada Familia School, where I did six months of teaching practice, and I have received hugs and kisses from my students there. And I have thought about how I miss Spain and how I am looking forward to working in a school here, even if I am very happy in London. Maybe in September…

Las ideas de los más pequeños/ The ideas of the little boys

Trabajar y tratar con niños durante tantos años tiene muchas ventajas, pero me voy a centrar en las que repercuten en mi faceta como escritor.

No he conocido a ningún niño al que no le guste leer y/ o que le lean, al menos entre los más pequeños, por lo que siempre son una buenísima opción para comprobar si los textos que he escrito para tal público son bien recibidos por ellos. De momento, según lo que he visto, creo que mis cuentos les gustarán.

Por otra parte, casi más importante, no puedo olvidarme de la imaginación tan inmensa que tienen. Son una fuente de inspiración increíble, siempre con ideas sobre animales capaces de correr cualquier aventura, lugares mágicos y personajes maravillosos.

Ya sabéis que uno de los cuentos de mi libro (seguimos a la espera de noticias…) está inspirado por Lucía, una de mis alumnas durante mis prácticas en el Colegio del Hospital del Niño Jesús, y ya voy teniendo más ocurrencias para futuras historias. Quién sabe, quizás algo relacionado con un tiburón para un niño muy, muy especial…

Working and dealing with children for so many years have a lot of advantages, but I am going to focus on those ones that have an effect on my writing side.

I haven’t met any child who doesn’t like reading and/ or being read, at least among the youngest ones, so they are always a nice option to test if the texts I write for them are going to be appropriated. For the time being, as I have checked, I think that they are going to like my tales.

On the other hand, and even more important, I can’t forget about the huge imagination that they have. They are an incredible inspirational source, always bringing new ideas about animals that can live any kind of adventure, magical places or fantasy characters.

As you know, one of the tales of my book (still waiting for some news, by the way…) was inspired by Lucía, one of my students during my teaching practice at the Hospital del Niño Jesús School, and I have some new ideas for future stories. Who knows, maybe something connected to a shark for a very, very special child…

Mi nuevo trabajo/ My new job

Los que recordéis esta entrada del blog Enseñando a través de videoconferencia sabréis que me habría gustado no tener que escribir esta otra Proyectos que tendrán que esperar. Pero, los que me conocéis, también sabéis que siempre he creído en el destino y que siempre pienso que todo lo que me ocurre o me deja de ocurrir es por un motivo, y en esta ocasión, el motivo me hace muy feliz.

El lunes pasado empecé a formar parte de ese proyecto del que ya os hablé, y ya soy uno más en el fantástico equipo de Videoconferencing for Global Learning. El proyecto es precioso, ya sabéis, estamos enseñando inglés a colegios de primaria en Uruguay a través de videoconferencia. Esto es posible gracias a la tenacidad y la profesionalidad de la directora del proyecto, Mina, una persona a la que ya considero amiga aunque sea mi jefa y que ha confiado en mí prácticamente desde que nos conocimos.

El proyecto se incluye dentro del llamado Plan Ceibal, bajo el nombre de «Ceibal en inglés» (pinchad en el enlace si queréis tener más información al respecto), y se realiza bajo el paraguas del British Council. De momento estamos con el proyecto piloto, que dura hasta mediados de diciembre. Si todo sale bien, en marzo nos darán el proyecto importante, así que tenemos que hacerlo muy, muy bien.

Gracias de nuevo por haber acogido la vuelta del blog tan bien como lo habéis hecho y gracias también a todos los que me habéis apoyado desde el primer momento en mi aventura londinense. ¡Hasta la semana que viene!

Those who remember this post Teaching via videoconference should know that I wish I wouldn’t have to have written this other one Projects that will have to wait. But, those who know me, should also know that I have always believed in destiny and that I always think that everything that happens to me or that doesn’t happen is because of a reason and, this time, the reason makes me very happy.

Last Monday I started being part of that project I have talked to you about, and now I am one more member of the fantastic team at Videoconferencing for Global Learning. The project is wonderful, you know, we are teaching English in primary schools in Uruguay via videoconference. This is possible thanks to the tenacity and professionalism of Mina, a person who I consider my friend even if she is my boss and a person who has always believed in me practically since the first day we met each other.

The project is included inside Plan Ceibal, under the name of “Ceibal in English”, and it is done under the umbrella of the British Council. From now and on, we are dealing with the pilot project and that lasts until the middle of December. If everything goes all right, they will give us the important project, so we have to do it very, very well.

Thanks everybody for having received the blog in a so good way and thanks too to those who have supported me since the first moment with my adventure in London. See you next week!

Como lo prometido es deuda, aquí tenéis la primera entrada de esta nueva temporada con el vídeo que os prometí: la charla que di en el Hospital Infantil del Niño Jesús, en Madrid, con motivo del Día del Libro el pasado 23 de abril de 2014. En él hablo de la importancia de la literatura en la educación, de los beneficios que leer y escribir nos pueden aportar en la vida y, además, el vídeo acaba con una sorpresita… ¡Pinchad en la imagen para verlo!

As I promised, here you have the first post of this new season with the video I told you about: the speech I gave at the Niño Jesús Hospital for Children, in Madrid, because of the World Book Day last April 23rd, 2014. In that video I talk about the importance of literature in education, about the benefits that reading and writing can bring to our lives and, also, the video ends up with a little surprise… Click on the picture to watch it! I am sorry it is in Spanish, though.

Lo mejor de ser profe/ The best thing of being a teacher

En los últimos días he recibido varios mensajes en forma de tarjeta, e-mail o de voz que han hecho que siga afianzándome en la idea de que cambiar toda mi vida para estudiar Magisterio ha sido una de las mejores decisiones que he tomado nunca.

No quiero enrollarme demasiado, tan solo diré que lo mejor que te puede ocurrir cuando eres profesor es que tus alumnos te recuerden. Si consigues eso, puedes estar más que satisfecho, pues significará que has hecho bien tu trabajo.

La semana pasada recibí dos mensajes que me hicieron sentirme muy orgulloso y estar muy feliz. Uno, de Vanessa, una alumna mía durante este curso que el próximo año irá a la universidad a estudiar español. Me regaló una taza y una tarjeta en la que me agradecía todo lo que he hecho por ella durante el curso y me decía que, sin mi ayuda, su español no sería ni la mitad de bueno. El otro, de la mamá de una de las alumnas que tuve durante mis últimas prácticas, diciéndome que su hija se acordaba mucho de mí y que había significado mucho para ella.

Qué os voy a decir, lloré con los dos mensajes. Pero lloré de felicidad. No me esperaba ninguno de los dos mensajes, y recibirlos me hizo pensar que he hecho bien mi trabajo y que algunos de mis alumnos se acordarán de mí porque les aporté algo importante. Y, con eso, soy FELIZ.

Gracias, Vanessa. Gracias, A, P y E (no he puesto vuestros nombres, por si lo preferíais así). Gracias por alegrarme la semana y por hacerme saber que estoy haciendo lo que realmente me gusta hacer: enseñar.

During the last days I have received some messages in a card, an e-mail or by voice that have made me reassure that changing my whole life to become a teacher has been one of the best decisions that I have ever made.

I don’t want to talk too much; I just want to say that the best thing you can get when you are a teacher is that your pupils will remember you. If you get that, you can be more than satisfied, as it will mean that you have done your work in the best possible way.

Last week I received two messages that made me feel extremely proud and happy. One, from Vanessa, one of my students during this year who will study Spanish at uni. She gave me a mug and a card in which she thanked me for all that I have done for her and said that, without me, her Spanish wouldn’t be as good as it is now. The other one, from one of my students last year during my teaching practice’s mother, telling me that her daughter still remembers me and that I meant a lot for her.

What can I say? I just cried with both messages. But there were tears of happiness. I didn’t expect any of them, and they both made me think that I did my work well and that some of my students will remember me because I gave them something important. And, just because of that, I am HAPPY.

Thank you, Vanessa. Thank you, A, Pilar and E (maybe you didn’t want me to write your names down, so I have just written your initials, just in case). Thanks for making my week and for letting me know that I am doing what I really want to do: teaching.
