Las ideas de los más pequeños/ The ideas of the little boys

Trabajar y tratar con niños durante tantos años tiene muchas ventajas, pero me voy a centrar en las que repercuten en mi faceta como escritor.

No he conocido a ningún niño al que no le guste leer y/ o que le lean, al menos entre los más pequeños, por lo que siempre son una buenísima opción para comprobar si los textos que he escrito para tal público son bien recibidos por ellos. De momento, según lo que he visto, creo que mis cuentos les gustarán.

Por otra parte, casi más importante, no puedo olvidarme de la imaginación tan inmensa que tienen. Son una fuente de inspiración increíble, siempre con ideas sobre animales capaces de correr cualquier aventura, lugares mágicos y personajes maravillosos.

Ya sabéis que uno de los cuentos de mi libro (seguimos a la espera de noticias…) está inspirado por Lucía, una de mis alumnas durante mis prácticas en el Colegio del Hospital del Niño Jesús, y ya voy teniendo más ocurrencias para futuras historias. Quién sabe, quizás algo relacionado con un tiburón para un niño muy, muy especial…

Working and dealing with children for so many years have a lot of advantages, but I am going to focus on those ones that have an effect on my writing side.

I haven’t met any child who doesn’t like reading and/ or being read, at least among the youngest ones, so they are always a nice option to test if the texts I write for them are going to be appropriated. For the time being, as I have checked, I think that they are going to like my tales.

On the other hand, and even more important, I can’t forget about the huge imagination that they have. They are an incredible inspirational source, always bringing new ideas about animals that can live any kind of adventure, magical places or fantasy characters.

As you know, one of the tales of my book (still waiting for some news, by the way…) was inspired by Lucía, one of my students during my teaching practice at the Hospital del Niño Jesús School, and I have some new ideas for future stories. Who knows, maybe something connected to a shark for a very, very special child…

Un poquito de organización/ A bit of organization

Por si no os lo había dicho, escribir «El destino de Tamarán« fue una tarea muy, muy complicada. No solo por el hecho de que tuviera que inventarme por completo un mundo nuevo, con sus habitantes, sus reinos e, incluso, algunas especies vegetales sino porque fui un desastre. Lo escribí sin seguir ningún tipo de guión, solo llevado por las ideas que iban surgiendo. No era todo lo constante que quería ser por falta de tiempo, por lo que retomarlo después de semanas sin escribir era bastante complicado. Tuve que revisarlo, corregirlo y ampliarlo unas tres o cuatro veces porque me encontré con muchísimos errores (como era de esperar).

Ahora estoy muy contento con el resultado, pero estoy seguro de que, con un poquito de organización, me habría costado muchísimo menos.

Pero, como de todo se aprende, creo que la historia que estoy escribiendo ahora (¡ya llevo 106 páginas!) la llevo mucho mejor. Sigo un guión (más o menos, porque siempre me escapo un poco, aunque siempre vuelvo a él). Llevo todo organizado al máximo, el número de páginas por capítulo, los nombres de los personajes y los lugares de los que hablo… Vamos, que he madurado bastante a la hora de enfrentarme a una nueva historia.

Por el momento, los que lo están leyendo me dan la razón. Gracias, mamá, mi primera lectora siempre. Gracias, Sara, por esos análisis tan… «supergeniales», jeje. David, no sé a qué esperas, hijo… 😉

Ya no me queda demasiado para terminarlo (o eso creo), así que os seguiré informando…

Just in case I didn’t tell you, writing “El destino de Tamarán” was a very, very tough task. Not only because I had to create a new world out of nothing, with its inhabitants, their kingdoms and, even, some plant species, but because I was a complete disaster. I wrote it without following any guide notes, only following the ideas that appeared day by day. I was not as constant as I would like to be due to the lack of time, so coming back to it after weeks without writing was quite complicated. I had to revise it, correct it and extend it three or four times because I found out may mistakes (as it was obvious).

Now, I am very happy with the result, but I am sure that, with a bit of organization, it would have been much easier.

But you can always learn something from every single moment, so I think that I am doing much better with the story that I am writing now (106 pages already!). I am following a guide (more or less, as I always step out of it, although I go back to it as soon as I can). Everything is more organized, the number of pages per chapter, the names of the characters and the places I write about… Well, I think now I am more mature when it comes to face a new story.

By the way, everyone that is reading it say I am right. Thanks, mum, always my first reader. Thanks, Sara, for your… “superbrilliant” analysis. David, I don’t know what are you waiting for, man… 😉

It won’t take me too long to finish it (or so I think), so I will keep you updated…

¿Por qué los clásicos son clásicos?/ Why classics are classics?

Cuando leo entrevistas a autores, una de las preguntas que nunca falla es: ¿Qué otros autores te han inspirado? Y, al menos en lo que se refiere a la literatura fantástica, hay algunos autores que tampoco suelen faltar al dar la respuesta. J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, C. S. Lewis, Michael Moorcock, , George R. R. Martin, Michael Ende, Ana María Matute en nuestro país… Yo os pregunto, ¿qué tienen en común estos autores? Y la respuesta está en el título de esta entrada: son clásicos. ¿Por qué? Pues porque su obra no ha sido ni será un éxito momentáneo ni perecedero; no quedará en el olvido por mucho que el tiempo pase. Sus libros, sus personajes, los mundos que han creado… Todo eso permanecerá ahí, en la mente de todos los lectores. Son autores eternos con historias tan eternas como ellos mismos.

Hogwarts, Fantasía, Narnia… Elric de Melniboné, Gudú, Gandalf, los Stark… Todos lugares y personajes inventados, sacados de la mente de genios tan brillantes que, aunque fantásticos, los hicieron reales en nuestros corazones. ¿No os parece algo maravilloso?

Como espero que, algún día, me hagan a mí esa misma pregunta, cuáles son los autores que más me han influenciado a la hora de escribir, os adelantaré la respuesta: todos. Si han llegado a ser clásicos es porque han sido o son escritores geniales, son maestros, y de los maestros siempre hay que intentar aprender.

Por daros un nombre, os diré que uno de mis autores favoritos es Michael Ende. “La Historia Interminable” fue una fuente de inspiración inagotable mientras escribía “El destino de Tamarán”, y “Momo”… ¿Qué os podría decir de “Momo”? Pues que es uno de los mejores libros que jamás se han escrito, al menos para mí. Si no lo habéis leído, lo podéis apuntar en la lista.

When I read any interview to an autor there is a question that is always there: Who other authors have inspired you? And, at least when we talk about fantastic literature, there are some authors that are always there as well. J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, C. S. Lewis, Michael Moorcock, , George R. R. Martin, Michael Ende, Ana María Matute in Spain… And I throw a question to you all, what do these authors have in common? The answer is in the title of this post: they are classics. Why? Well, because their work is not a momentary or perishable success; it won’t be lost in the oblivion. Their books, their characters, the worlds they created… All of that will remain there, in the minds of every reader. They are eternal authors with stories as eternal as themselves.

Hogwarts, Fantasy, Narnia… Elric of Melniboné, Gudú, Gandalf, the Stark… All of them are invented places and characters, they all came up from genius minds, writers so brilliant that, even if they are fantastic, they made them real in our hearts. Don’t you think it is wonderful?

As I hope someone will ask me the same question one day, who are the authors that have had a strongest influence when I write, I will tell you the answer now: all of them. If they are classics is because they have been or they are magnificent writers, they are masters, and we are supposed to learn from masters.

If I have to give you a name, I would say that one of my favourite writers is Michael Ende. “The Neverending Story” was a never ending source of inspiration whilst I was writing “El destino de Tamarán”, and “Momo”… What could I say about “Momo”? Well, it is one of the best books that have been ever written, at least for me. If you have not read it yet, you can add the title to your checklist.

Nueva imagen/ New look

Después de un tiempo sin publicar nada en el blog, y con mil ideas y proyectos que os contaré a la vuelta de las vacaciones, tan solo quiero enseñaros la nueva imagen del blog, esperando que me digáis todos qué os parece el cambio…

Intentando hacer algo diferente/ Trying to make something different

Después de tener acabado “Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados”, “El destino de Tamarán” y “A la sombra de un gigante”, los tres proyectos que tengo coleando por ahí, ya estoy trabajando en el siguiente.

Con lo que llevo, aunque aún son solo proyectos, he cubierto varios campos de la literatura infantil y juvenil.

Como ya sabéis, los cuentos de Lina y de otros personajes cubren lo que sería los cuentos infantiles tradicionales. Tamarán es (en principio) una trilogía de literatura fantástica que podría asemejarse a la fantasía heroica, con algunas características (sin compararme con nadie, obviamente) propias de “Las Crónicas de Narnia”, “El Señor de los Anillos”, “La Historia Interminable” o “Memorias de Idhún”. Con el gigante podríamos estar hablando de lo que Alazraki denomina literatura neofantástica.

Pues bien, con la idea de intentar no repetirme en lo que escribo (aunque, si me dejan, seguiré escribiendo más cosas dentro de esos mismos campos), el libro que estoy escribiendo ahora cambia de registro. Siguiendo por la fantasía, esta vez se trata de una distopía, y solo va a ser un libro. Para los que no lo sepáis, una distopía viene a ser lo contrario a una utopía, es decir, son historias en las que se presenta un mundo desolado, empeorado, devastado… Sagas como “Los Juegos del Hambre” o “Divergente” encajarían en este tipo de literatura, aunque la historia que estoy escribiendo no es tan futurista, por eso de intentar hacer algo diferente.

Como ya anuncié en Facebook hace tiempo, me he planteado acabarlo en verano. Por el momento, llevo tan solo diez páginas, pero tengo toda la historia más o menos planificada. No adelanto título ni argumento ni nada, que luego esas cosas cambian y no quiero liaros. Solo os diré que, como siempre que escribo, tengo muchísima ilusión y muchísimas ganas de seguir tamborileando el teclado para que la historia avance.

After finishing “Lina’s scarves and other animalated tales”, “Tamaran’s fate” and “In the shadow of a giant”, the three projects I am moving around, I am already working on the next one.

With these three stories, even if they are still just projects, I have covered several children’s and young adults’ literature fields.

As you know, Lina’s and other characters’ tales could cover traditional children’s tales. Tamarán is (or so I hope) a fantasy trilogy that could be included in the known as heroic fantasy, with some similarities (without comparing myself to any of them) from “The Chronicles of Narnia”, “The Lord of the Rings”, “The Neverending Story” or “Idhun’s Memories”. With the giant we could be talking about what Alazraki calls neo-fantasy literature.

Well, with the idea of trying not to repeat the same topics when I write (although I will keep on writing more stories like the ones I have already written), the book I am writing now changes the register. Still on fantasy, this time it is a dystopia, and it will only be one book. For those who don’t know what a dystopia is, it is the opposite of an utopia, that is, stories where the world is presented as something destroyed, deteriorated, devastated… Sagas like “The Hunger Games” or “Divergent” would fit in this kind of literature, but the story I am writing is not as futuristic as them, just to try to make something different.

As I announced some time ago on Facebook, my intention is finishing it during the summer. By now, I just have written ten pages, but the whole story is more or less planned. I won’t say anything about the title, not even about the plot, as these things change and I don’t want to mess it up. The only thing I’ll say is that, as every time I write something, I am full of illusion and dying to keep on drumming the keyboard to make the story progress.

Fantasía preciosa en una pantalla/ Beautiful fantasy on a screen

Aún a la espera de ver la última película de los maravillosos Estudios Ghibli, “El viento se levanta”, firmada por Hayao Miyazaki (un genio), quiero dedicar esta entrada a las películas de esta fábrica de sueños.

Son tantos los títulos que me han atrapado, tantas las películas que me han inspirado… “Ponyo en el acantilado”, “El castillo ambulante”, “La princesa Mononoke”, “Arrietty y el mundo de los diminutos”… ¡Tantas!

No sé si es la estética; lo increíbles que son los dibujos; el tempo que utilizan; los diálogos… Seguramente sea el conjunto, pero lo cierto es que todas las películas de Ghibli que he visto me han enamorado por una u otra razón.

Sabéis que creo que la inspiración hay que buscarla en todas las esquinas posibles y el cine, si es así de bonito, es una herramienta muy, muy útil.

Y, para acabar, con todos mis respetos a Disney (y con todo lo que me encanta), me quedo con Ghibli y sus historias y, por eso, os las recomiendo a todos y a todas.

Still waiting to watch the new film by the marvellous Ghibli Studios, “The sun rises”, signed by Hayao Miyazaki (a genius), I want to dedicate this post to the films by this factory of dreams.

There are so many titles that have trapped me, so many movies that have inspired me… “Ponyo on the cliff by the sea”, “Howl’s moving castle”, “Princess Mononoke”, “The secret world of Arrietty”… So many!

I don’t know if it is because of the aesthetic; because of the incredible drawings; becuase of the tempo they use; because of the dialogues… Surely, it is because of everything together, but the truth is that all the Ghibli movies I have seen have made me fall in love for one reason or another.

You know that I believe that inspiration has to be searched in every possible corner and cinema, if it is as beautiful as the one I am talking about, is a very, very useful tool.

And, as a conclusion, with all my respects to Disney (and knowing that I love their movies), I have to saty that I prefer Ghibli and their stories and, for that reason, I recommend them to you all.

A la sombra de un gigante/ In the shadow of a giant

Lo suelto así, a bocajarro, tengo nuevo proyecto a la vista. Bueno, no “tengo”, sino “tenemos”, porque no estoy solo. Es más, me he buscado a una compañera maravillosa, una artista genial y una buenísima amiga: Alicia Roy (pinchad en su nombre para ir a su web). La conocí gracias a su hermana, Paula, compañera de trabajo durante mis primeras prácticas en una agencia de eventos hace ya… ¿Siete? ¿Ocho años? Siempre he tenido la inmensa suerte de conocer a personas increíbles donde planto el pie, y ellas dos son fantásticas.

Alicia también está viviendo en Londres, y un día me comentó que por qué no intentábamos hacer algo juntos. Yo pondría las letras. Ella, los pinceles. El trabajo aún está en proceso, pero los dos estamos muy ilusionados y, aunque yo no sea objetivo, os diré que mi opinión es que está quedando precioso.

Una vez que esté todo, tendremos que tirar de contactos y probar suerte… ¿Cruzáis los dedos de nuevo por nosotros?

No puedo daros demasiada información. Se trata de un relato breve escrito por mí hace algún tiempo y que he sacado del cajón para que Alicia le dé vida con sus ilustraciones. El título es el que da nombre esta entrada, y os dejo también la frase con la que empieza y uno de los dibujos.

Me encantaría que me dierais vuestra opinión, ¿os animáis?

I will let it out without messing around, I am working in a new project. Well, is not “I am”, but “we are”, as I am not alone. What’s more, I have found a wonderful partner, a brilliant artist and a nice friend: Alicia Roy (poke on his name to go to her website). I met her thanks to her sister, Paula, a colleague during my first internship in an event organization agency… Seven? Eight years ago? I have been always lucky meeting up amazing people everywhere I step on, and the two of them are just awesome.

Alicia is also living in London, and one day she mentioned that we could try to do something together. I would put down the letters. She would go for the brushes. The project is in its course, but we are really excited about it and, even if I am not very impartial, I would say that it looks really beautiful.

Once everything is done, we will have to use our connections and seek for some luck… Will you cross your fingers for us once again?

I cannot give you as much information as I would like. It is about a short story I wrote some years ago and that I have taken out of the drawer to allow Alicia to give some life to it with her illustrations. You can read the title of it, as it is naming this very post, and I let you see the first sentence of the story, as well as one of the drawings.

Fantástica fantasía/ Fantastic fantasy

Hay algunas personas que consideran que la literatura juvenil-fantástica no debería compararse con la literatura «tradicional». Yo me pregunto, ¿por qué? ¿Qué diferencias tan grandes existen? ¿El público al que se dirige? ¿El tipo de escenarios? ¿Los personajes? ¿Los argumentos?

Si la literatura es el «arte que emplea como instrumento la palabra», ¿por qué ha de ser un género más o menos literatura que otro?

Quizás sea que el éxito abrumador que sagas como Harry Potter, Crepúsculo, Los Juegos del Hambre o, yéndonos a lo nacional, Memorias de Idhún lo que «enfada» a aquellos cuya opinión no es positiva acerca de la fantasía. No hablamos solo de los libros. Cualquier saga que se digne (a excepción de lo escrito en España, aunque no se entienda) tiene sus películas, igual o más de exitosas. ¿Qué me decís de Juego de Tronos? Fantasía pura y dura, brujas y dragones incluidos, y millones de personas leyendo los libros y/o viendo la serie (que es espectacular, todo sea dicho). ¿No es esto literatura?

Siempre desde la humilde opinión de quien intenta hacerse un hueco como escritor infantil-juvenil, os digo que lo es. Mientras he estado escribiendo El destino de Tamarán he podido experimentar lo que significa escribir un libro, escribir literatura y, aunque mis libros cuenten con criaturas y mundos fantásticos, animales que hablan u otros elementos fantásticos, el proceso, la intención y el resultado son los mismos que si escribiera sobre algo real.

Por todo esto, a los que piensan que la literatura fantástica es un género menor, los invito a que se olviden de los prejuicios y lean alguno de estos libros con el único propósito de disfrutar la lectura porque, al fin y al cabo, eso es lo que buscamos en un libro, ¿no?

There are some people who think that fantasy and young literature should not be compared to “traditional” literature. I wonder, why? What are the huge differences between them? The target? The kind of scnearios? The characters? The plots?

If literatura is the “Written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit”, why should it be a minor genre?

Maybe is the extremely success of sagas as Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games or, talking about Spain, Memorias de Idhún what upsets those whose opinions about fantasy  is not that positive. We are not talking just about books. Each saga has its own movies (with the exception of those written in Spain, even if it has no sense at all), with the same success. What about Game of Thrones? Pure fantasy, witches and dragons included, and millions of people reading the books and/or watching the tv show (amazing, by the way). Isn’t it literature?

Always from the humble opinión of one who is trying to find his place as a kids and Young writer, iI say it is. While I have been writing El destino de Tamarán I have had the chance of experimenting what writing a book means, writing literature and, even if my books have fantastic creatures and worlds, animals that are able to talk or any other fantastic elements, the process, the goal and the result are the same ones as if I was writing about something real.

Because all that, to those who think that fantastic literature, I invite them to forget about prejudices and to read some of these books with the only purpose of enjoying the reading because, at the end, this is what we look for when we read a book, isn’t it?

Un poco de ayuda/ A little help

Ahora que “El destino de Tamarán” está terminado, he puesto a “trabajar” a mis correctores oficiales… David ya hizo una revisión a fondo que me ayudó muchísimo. Manuel también hizo lo propio, dándome consejos (como siempre) utilísimos. Almudena. Mónica. Sara. Felipe. Y, por supuesto, mi primera lectora… ¡Mi madre!

Después de la paliza mental que supone terminar cualquier texto, es normal que muchos errores, ya sean ortográficos, de estilo o de cualquier tipo, así que es muy aconsejable que unos ojos ajenos le echen un vistazo con papel y boli a mano para ir anotando lo que encuentren.

Creedme, aunque penséis que vuestros textos estén perfectos y sepáis que vosotros mismos los habéis revisado un millón de veces, seguirá habiendo errores que no podréis ver. Vuestros amigos o familiares, si están dispuestos, os ayudarán a encontrarlos.

Vosotros lo agradeceréis, vuestros textos, también, y si vuestra idea es mandarlo a alguna editorial, seguro que todo estará mucho más correcto y que también lo agradecerán.

Así que, ya sabéis, escribid, revisad y sobornad a vuestros allegados para que ofrezcan un poco de ayuda. Seguro que ellos, aunque no os lo digan, también os lo agradecen.

Now that “El destino de Tamarán” is finished, my oficial correctors are “working” on it… David made an intensive revision that helped a lot. Manuel also revised it, giving me some advises as useful as always. Almudena. Mónica. Sara. Felipe. And, of course, my first reader… My mum!

After the mental fatigue due to finishing a text, it is normal that many mistakes, ortographical, of stile or any other type, so it is very recomendable that other eyes can take a look at it with a pen and some paper to write down everything they find out.

Believe me, even if you think that your texts are perfect and you have revised them a million times, there will be some erros still that you will not be able to see. Your friends or family, if they want to do it, will help you to find them out.

You will be welcome, your texts will be as well, and, if your idea is sending them to a publishing house, you can be sure that they will be more correct and the editors will be welcome too.

So, write, revise the texts and blackmail your closest friends or family members to offer you a little help. They will be welcome as well, even if they do not say it.

Pues sí. Hoy, día 7 de abril de 2014, en mi casita en Londres, puedo decir que la revisión final de «El destino de Tamarán» ha terminado, y estoy taaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan contento… 🙂

Ha sido muchísimo esfuerzo; muchísimos días; muchísimos quebraderos de cabeza; muchísimas ideas apuntadas en el móvil, en la agenda, en cualquier lugar donde pudiera anotarlas para que no se me olvidaran… Finalmente, el libro está terminado.

El resultado final han sido 261 páginas divididas en 28 capítulos. Solo espero que, si he de hacer una nueva revisión, sea de la mano de alguna editorial.

Por el momento, toca esperar y decidir qué es lo siguiente que voy a escribir…

Yes, today, the 7th of April of 2014 I can tell that the final revision of «El destino de Tamarán» is finished, and I am soooooooooooooo happy… 🙂

It has been a lot of effort; a lot of days, a lot of ideas written down in my mobile phone, my planner or any other place where I could write them not to be forgotten… Finally, the novel is ready.

The final result has been 261 pages in 28 chapters. I just hope that, if I have to revise it once again, it would be helped by some publishing house.

From now and on, I just can wait and decide what will be the next thing that I write…
