Día Internacional del Libro Infantil y Juvenil/ International Day of Children and YA’s Book

El día 2 de abril (coincidiendo con el cumpleaños de mi hermano) se celebra el Día Internacional del Libro Infantil y Juvenil. ¿Por qué este día? Porque se conmemora el aniversario del nacimiento del genial Hans Christian Andersen, maestro de todos los que queremos hacernos un hueco en la literatura infantil. Llego tarde, lo sé, pero esta semana ha sido bastante completa por muchas razones, algunas de las cuales os explicaré pronto.

La literatura infantil y juvenil… Considerada por muchos como un subgénero de menor importancia que la literatura “adulta”. No sé vosotros, pero yo estoy totalmente en contra por varios motivos, como ya dije en la entrada Fantástica Fantasía .

Por eso, prefiero no categorizar los distintos tipos de literatura que hay. Yo he leído libros para adultos cuando era niño y joven y ahora leo libros infantiles y juveniles, y he disfrutado y disfruto tanto los unos como los otros. Por lo tanto… ¡Viva la literatura! Y, por supuesto, ¡viva la literatura infantil y juvenil!

In April, 2nd (same date as my brother’s birthday) we celebrate the World Children and YA’s Book Day. Why? Because it is also Hans Christian Andersen’s date of birth, one of the masters of everyone who wants to become a children or YA’s author. I am a bit late, I know, but this week has been quite busy, I’ll let you know what’s happened as soon as I can.

Children and YA’s literature… Considered by some people as something less important than “adult’s” literature. I don’t know what your opinion is, but I completely disagree for several reasons, as I already said on the post Fantastic Fantasy.

For that reason, I prefer not to classify the different kinds of literature that we can find. I have read books for adults when I was a child and now I read children and YA’s books, and I have enjoyed and enjoy both. So… Long life to literature! And, of course, long life to children and YA’s literature!

Educación, literatura y videoconferencia/ Education, literature and videoconference

Un nuevo autor ha venido hoy a mi instituto, y he vuelto a disfrutar de dos de mis mayores pasiones a la vez: la educación y la literatura. Además, también se ha unido la videoconferencia, así que esta entrada era obligatoria.

El autor ha sido Dan Freedman, escritor de varios libros relacionados con el fútbol. Quizás el fútbol no es precisamente un tema sobre el que yo escribiría, pero Dan ha dado una razón más que suficiente para hacerlo: el fútbol es su mayor pasión. Escribe sobre lo que le gusta, añadiendo vivencias propias y tratando temas tan actuales como el acoso escolar. Y parece que no le va mal del todo.

Me ha recordado un poco a la saga «Sara y las goleadoras«, de Laura Gallego. Unos libros que, sinceramente, no creo que lea, pero que están en las librerías españolas desde hace ya tiempo.

No obstante, dicen que de todo se aprende, ¿no? Por lo que pueda pasar, yo sigo apuntando ideas en mi libreta, para el día en que sean mis libros los que estén en las librerías y bibliotecas y sea yo el que vaya a dar charlas a centros escolares.

A new author has come to my school today, and I have enjoyed two of my passions at the same time again: education and literature. Also, videoconferencing is been envolved, so this post was something mandatory.

The author has been Dan Freedman, writer of some books related to football. Maybe football is not exactly a topic that I would write about, but Dan has given the right reason to do so: football is his biggest passion. He writes about what he likes, adding some of his own experiences and talking about issues as factual as bullying. And it seems he is doing pretty well.

It has reminded me of Laura Gallego‘s saga «Sara and the goal scorers«. A saga that, being honest, I don’t think I’ll read, but that you can find in Spanish book shops.

However, they say you can always learn something new, don’t they? Just in case, I keep writing down every idea in my notebook, so I can use them the day my books will be in book shops and libraries and I will be the one going to talk about them to different schools.

Leer con el corazón/ Reading with the heart

¿Sabéis esos libros que te atrapan desde la primera página? ¿Esos que de verdad disfrutas, que se te quedan dentro? Yo acabo de descubrir uno. Me lo trajeron los Reyes Magos y, como siempre, acertaron totalmente: «La ladrona de libros«, de Markus Zusak. Una auténtica delicia.

Probablemente lo conozcáis porque se ha hecho la película hace poco pero, aun gustándome mucho el cine, dudo que sea mejor que el libro. Por cómo está escrito, por lo original en la forma, por el lenguaje… Es de esos libros que tienes que leer despacito para disfrutar de cada palabra, de cada frase… ¿Os ha pasado alguna vez?

Además, los libros se presentan como el mejor regalo del mundo… ¿Qué más se puede pedir? Os lo recomiendo a todos y a todas, estoy seguro de que os gustará tanto como a mí.

Do you know those books that catch your attention from the first page? Those that you really enjoy, that stay inside of you? I have just found one out. It was a present from the Three Wise Men and, as they always do, they hit the target: «The book thief«, by Markus Zusak. A complete delight.

You’ll probably heard about it because they have made a movie recently but, even if I like movies a lot, I doubt that it is as good as the book. Because of the way it has been written, because of its originality, because of the language… It is one of those books that you have to read very slowly to enjoy every word, every sentence… Has it ever happened to you as well?

Furthermore, books are presented as the best of the presents in the world… What else can we ask for? I reccomend you all to read it, I am sure you will like it as well as I do.

Un equipo que acaba de empezar/ A team that has just started

Ya la conocéis. Os he hablado de ella varias veces, incluso en la última entrada. Es Alicia Roy. Y desde hace un tiempo, somos pareja. Noooo, no pareja sentimental, sino profesional. Desde que trabajamos juntos por primera vez, supe que nuestra relación duraría mucho, mucho tiempo.

No es solo que sea una maravillosa artista, sino que entiende mis palabras a la perfección. Estoy deseando que todos podáis ver el resultado, porque estoy seguro de que no va a dejar a nadie indiferente. Por eso, estamos ya metidos en dos proyectos juntos. Uno que ya conocéis y otro en el que acabamos de embarcarnos y del que ya os hablaré cuando corresponda.

You know her already. I have written about her in several occasions, including last week. I am talking about Alicia Roy. And I have to tell you that, since some time, we are a couple. Noooo, not a sentimental couple, but a professional one. Since we first worked together, I knew our relationship was going to last a lot of time.

It is not just that she is a wonderful artist, but she also understands my words perfectly. I can’t wait for you to see the result, because I am sure that nobody will remain indifferent. Because of that, we are involved in two projects together. You know one of them already, and I will tell you about the other one when it comes to that.

¿De dónde vienen las ideas?/ Where do the ideas come from?

A veces me preguntan que cómo se me ha ocurrido escribir las historias que escribo, cuál ha sido la razón para escribir un determinado texto.

¿De dónde sacas las ideas? Pues, a veces, se me ocurre una sola frase y la dejo reposar hasta que encuentro cómo incluirla en una historia. Otras veces es un personaje. O un diálogo. O una imagen. Hay poemas que he escrito a partir de un solo verso. Novelas que salen de un sueño. Cuentos que aparecen gracias a un peluche.

Lo importante es tener los ojos y los oídos bien abiertos para empaparse de todo lo que ocurre a nuestro alrededor. Cualquier detalle puede ser el inicio de una buena historia.

Sometimes people ask me how I can write the stories that I write, what was the reason to write a specific text.

Where do you get the ideas from? Well, sometimes, it is just one sentence that I let there until I find how to include it in a story. Other times it is a character. A dialogue. Or an image. I have written some poems from a single verse. Novels that start with a dream. Tales that appear thanks to a soft toy.

The most important thing is to keep eyes and ears wide open so we can absorb everything that is surrounding us. Any detail could be the beginning of a nice story.

A por el final/ Towards the end

Esta va a ser una entrada breve, que tengo que aprovechar el tiempo libre (al que suelo echar bastante de menos normalmente) y que la inspiración sigue conmigo.

Ya solo me queda escribir el desenlace de la historia en la que estoy trabajando. Bueno, digamos, la historia más larga en la que estoy metido, aquella en la que ya os hablé aquí: Un año nuevo empieza/ A new year starts. Llevo escribiéndola prácticamente desde finales de la primavera del año pasado, y creo que va bastante bien encaminada. De momento, van treinta capítulos repartidos en ciento veintidós páginas. Siempre acabo rompiendo los cálculos que hago, pero, según creo, en unos cinco o diez capítulos máximo habré terminado. Entonces, será el tiempo de la revisión, proceso del que ya os hablé aquí El proceso de revisión.

Así que nada, os dejo para seguir escribiendo, os seguiré contando… 😉

This one is going to be a short post, as I have to take the so missed free time into advantage, as well as the inspiration that still holds my hand.

I just have to write the ending of the storu I am working on now. Well, let’s say the longest story I am involved with at the moment, the one I talk to you about here: Un año nuevo empieza/ A new year starts. I have been working on it since the end of last spring, and I think it is quite well organised now. It has thirty chapters divided in one hundred and twenty two pages so far. I always end up breaking the predictions I make, but I think I will finish with five to ten chapters more. Then, it will come the time for te revision.

So, I leave you for now, as I have to write, I’ll keep you updated… 😉

Hay momentos en los que, inmerso en una historia, necesitas hacer un parón que, aunque te moleste porque te impide escribir al ritmo que quieres, sabes que es necesario. Me está ocurriendo justo ahora, justo antes de empezar el desenlace del libro que estoy escribiendo. Después de varios días pensando que la inspiración se había marchado a lugares más cálidos, me di cuenta de que lo que tenía que hacer era parar. ¿Para qué? Sencillo: para documentarme.

Necesitaba presentar a algunos personajes nuevos y, por lo tanto, necesitaba describirlos. Algunas descripciones de otros personajes las he hecho usando solo la imaginación, pero con estos pensé que sería mejor si me informaba sobre las características de algunas tribus africanas para sacar algunas ideas, y eso fue lo que hice.

El resultado ha sido que los personajes ya están creados y que puedo volver a escribir a un ritmo normal de nuevo. Eso sí, no creáis que he dejado de escribir mientras me documentaba. He escrito algunas otras cositas de las que espero poder hablaros pronto.

There are moments when, immersed into the story, you need to stop for a while, even if it annoys you because it does not allow you to keep writing at the speed you would like to write, you know it is necessary. It is happening to me right now, when I am just about to start writing the ending of the book that I am working on at this moment. After some days thinking that inspiration was gone to a warmer place, I realised that what I needed to do was stopping. What for? Easy: to do some documentation work.

I needed to introduce some new characters and, so, I needed to describe them. Some other character’s descriptions came from my imagination, but, with these ones, I thought it will be better if I got a bit of information about some African tribes to get some ideas, and so I did.

The result has been that the characters have been already created and that I can continue writing at a normal speed again. Anyway, don’t think that I have given up writing whilst I was doing this documentation work. I have written some other little things that I hope I can show you soon.

Empieza un nuevo año/ A new year starts

Después de unas semanitas de vacaciones en mi adorada Madrid, ya he vuelto a Londres y a mis rutinas, lo que incluye retomar el blog.

Quiero aprovechar esta entrada, la primera de este año, para contaros los planes que tengo para este 2015.

  • Trabajo: si mis planes salen como espero, estaré en Londres hasta finales agosto. Ya os contaré más detalles en otra entrada, porque hay algunos proyectos en el aire que pueden salir o no. Después de eso, espero poder volver a Madrid.
  • Libros: acabo de terminar una historia breve en la misma línea de “A la sombra de un gigante” y ya está en manos de la genial Alicia Roy para que le dé vida. También estoy escribiendo el desenlace de una novela que empecé el verano pasado y que espero terminar en no más de un par de meses. Después de eso, tendré que decidir con qué sigo…

  • Publicaciones: en contacto aún con editoriales, desde luego, la crisis que aún hay en España no es el mejor panorama para un escritor primerizo. Aun así, no desisto y sigo intentándolo con todas mis fuerzas. Tengo buenas sensaciones para este año, espero que se cumplan.

Y creo que eso es todo. Tendréis que estar pendientes del blog para saber si cierro proyectos o no…

After some weeks of holidays in my dear Madrid, I have come back to London and to my routines, including the blog.

I want to take this post into advantage to tell you about my plans for this 2015.

  • Work: if my plans go as I hope, I will be in London until the end of August. I will give you more details in another post, as there are some projects that can happen or not. After that, I hope I can come back to Madrid.
  • Books: I have just finished writing a short story in the same line as “In the shadow of a giant”, and the brilliant Alicia Roy is taking a look at it to make it come to life. I am also writing the end of a novel that I have started last summer and I hope I’ll finish it in a couple of months. Then, I will have to decide what will be the next…

  • Publications: still in contact with some publishing houses, the crisis we have in Spain is not the best scenario for a “rookie”. However, I don’t give up and I keep trying as hard as I can. I have good feelings for this new year, I just hope I am right.

And I think that’s all for now. You will have to keep an eye on the blog to know if I get some projects…

Creando iconos/ Creating icons

Siempre he sido  muy fan de los iconos, sobre todo en relación con las ciudades (y, de hecho, siempre he pensado que es precisamente lo que le falta a Madrid). Ciudades como París, Roma, Londres o Nueva York tienen (al menos) un icono que relacionamos con ellas, en Madrid llegará un día en que también lo tengamos.

Pero este post no trata de monumentos. Llega a los cines británicos una película basada en un personaje literario muy, muy famoso por estas tierras: el osito Paddington. Sí, este pequeño oso con chubasquero, sombrero y que siempre lleva una maleta es todo un icono. Sus libros, escritos por Michael Bond e ilustrados por varios artistas, siendo el último R. W. Alley, cuentan con más de ciento cincuenta títulos y han sido traducidos a más de cuarenta idiomas. Increíble, ¿no creéis?

Pienso en si tenemos algo parecido en España y, sinceramente, no lo veo claro. Podríamos tener algo a nivel nacional, como Manolito Gafotas o Mortadelo y Filemón, pero no se conoce nuestro país al pensar en ellos como puede ocurrir con Tintín o Asterix y Obelix en Francia o, incluso, La Sirenita en Copenhague. Quizás tenga que empezar a pensar en algo…

¿Cómo lo veis vosotros? ¿Qué iconos literarios conocéis? ¿Os imagináis alguno que pueda asociarse con España?

I have always been a fan of icons, especially related to cities (and, by the way, I have always thought that Madrid still hasn’t got any). Cities like Paris, Rome, London or New York have (at least) one icon that we associate to them, there will be one day when we’ll have one in Madrid.

But this post is not about monuments. A movie based on a very, very popular literary character is coming up to cinemas: Paddington the bear. Yes, this little bear with its rain coat, its hat and that always carries a suitcase is a real icon. Its books, written by Michael Bond and illustrated by several artists, being R. W. Alley the last one, are more than 150 and have been translated to more than 40 languages. Amazing, don’t you think?

I try to think if we have something similar in Spain and, honestly, I think we haven’t. We could have something known by ourselves, like “Manolito Gafotas” or “Mortadelo and Filemón”, but our country is not related to us like it happens with Tintin or Asterix and Obelix in France or, even, The little mermaid and Copenhagen. I thinks I should start thinking of doing something…

Hablar de literatura/ To talk about literatura

Es raro encontrar a personas con las que hablar de literatura, ¿verdad? En una de mis entradas antiguas hice referencia a lo poco “cool” que era confesar que se lee (Leer es algo que se hace cuando no quieres estar aburrido), y creo que sacar la conversación sobre la literatura lo es aún menos si cabe… ¿Por qué creéis que esto ocurre?

Puede que tengamos en mente que hablar de literatura signifique desempolvar a los clásicos y tener una conversación aburrida y soporífera en la que hay que demostrar que se ha leído más a García Márquez, Cervantes, Shakespeare o a Dostoievski que el otro, pero no tiene por qué ser así. ¿Qué pasa con las conversaciones sobre libros infantiles? ¿O con las charlas entorno a sagas juveniles como Harry Potter o Crepúsculo? No debemos olvidar que todos estos mundos también forman parte de la literatura, y que no hay que estar en el Café Gijón para hablar sobre ellos.

Por eso es tan grato cuando, a quienes nos gusta leer, se nos aparece una persona con la que poder compartir opiniones sobre los libros que hemos leído, hacer y recibir recomendaciones… No dejemos que por literatura se entienda aburrimiento o pedantería. ¡Hablemos sobre ella!

It is very weird to find people with whom talk about literature, isn’t it? In one of my posts I talked about how confessing that you like reading was not really cool, and I think that talking about literature is even worst in terms of popularity, if that is possible… What is your opinion?

 

Maybe we have in mind that talking about literature means to remove the dust off the classics and to have a boring conversation where you should demonstrate that you have read more García Márquez, Cervantes, Shakespeare or Dostoievsky’s books than the other person, but it doesn’t have to be like this. What happens with the conversations about children’s books? Or about sagas for teenagers like Harry Potter or Twilight? We shouldn’t forget that all these universes are also a part of literature and that you don’t have to be in Bloomsbury to talk about them.

That’s why it is so pleasant to meet a person who you can talk about literature with, share opinions about the books that you have read, give them and receive some recommendations… We mustn’t allow literature to be understood like boredom or pedantry. Let’s talk about literature!
