¡Me han hecho una entrevista!/ I have been interviewed!

El mismo blog que ya hizo la primera reseña de un libro mío (El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos) me ha sorprendido ahora con mi primera entrevista como escritor. Si queréis saber más sobre el libro o sobre mi manera de escribir (o sobre mí), esta es una muy buena opción (pinchad en la foto de aquí abajo para verla).

A Laura, la encargada del blog, qué le voy a decir… En un mundo tan complicado de acceder y tan endogámico como es el de los blogs, perfiles y canales de literatura (sobre todo los juveniles), ella se fijó en mí, me leyó, me hizo comentarios muy bonitos sobre lo que escribo y me animó a seguir escribiendo. Todo sin conocerme y sin esperar ni recibir nada a cambio, solo mis libros, mi literatura. Hoy, sí, se está convirtiendo en una amiga que, a pesar de la distancia, cree en mí. Yo creo en ella también. Mucho. A veces la vida te sorprende con personas geniales, y ella es un cofre del tesoro, aunque haya perdido la llave y no se acuerde de todas las maravillas que guarda en su interior. ¡Gracias, Laura!

I couldn’t tell more things to her owner, Laura… In a world where it is so complicated to get in and so endogamic like the literature blogs, profiles or channels (specially those dedicated to young literature), she put her eyes on me, read me, made so beautiful comments about what I write and encouraged me to keep writing. All without knowing me at all and without expecting anything in return but my books, my literature. Today, and that is true, she is becoming a good friend and, despite the distance, she believes in me. And I also believe in her. A lot. Sometimes life surprises you with amazing people, and she is a treasure box, although she has lost the key and doesn’t remember the wonders she has inside. Thanks so much, Laura!

La primera reseña de Tamarán (only Spanish)

¡Qué ganas tenía de hacer esta entrada! Por primera vez en mi vida como escritor, un libro mío, «El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos», aparece en un blog de literatura junto a una reseña.

No os podéis imaginar la emoción mientras la leía, los nervios… y la satisfacción de comprobar que a la autora del blog, Laura Contrera Hernández, de Mi vida entre libros, le gustó tanto la historia, la ambientación y los personajes de Tamarán.

Pues sí, ya queda muy poco camino. Después de tanto (tanto) tiempo, el primer libro que pensé publicar es casi una realidad.

Voy a ser breve. Solo quiero deciros que ya he dado el visto bueno tanto a textos como a cubierta (¿qué os parece?) y que hoy mismo “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos” ha ido a imprenta.

Well, we’ve got a really short way to go already. After so (so) long, the first book I tried to publish is nearly something real.

I am not stealing much time from you. I just want to tell you that I have given my ok to the texts and the cover (do you like it?) and that today “The destiny of Tamarán: The incognito kingdoms” has been sent to the printing house.

¡Sorpresa, sorpresa!/ Surprise, surprise!

Tras más de ocho años desde que tuve la primera idea, hoy puedo decir que la publicación de “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos” está a la vuelta de la esquina.

Tras el envío, anoche, de las correcciones del tercer borrador que me envió la editorial (con muy poquitos errores ya), mi genial editor me quiso hacer el regalo de enviarme la primera versión de la portada justo antes de irme a dormir.

No sé si será la definitiva al cien por cien, pero, si no es así, el cambio será mínimo.

Solo puedo, una vez más, darle las gracias a Diego Iturriaga, mi editor, a la maquetadora, que está haciendo un trabajazo, y decir que me encanta cómo está quedando todo y que si, hasta ahora, había controlado bien los nervios… ¡a partir de ahora soy incapaz de controlarlos!

After more than eight years since I had the first idea, today I can say that the publication of “The destiny of Tamarán: The incognito kingdoms” is around the corner.

Last night, after sending the corrections of the third draft that my publishing house sent to me (with just a few mistakes), my amazing editor wanted to make me a present and he emailed me the first version of the cover right before I went bed.

I don’t know if this one will be the last one, but, if not, not much will be changed.

I just can say, once again, thanks to Diego Iturriaga, my editor, and the designer, who is making a huge effort. I can add that I love the way it looks so far and that, if I have been able to control my nerves until this moment… I can’t make it from now on!

Mis primeros ilustradores/ My first illustrators

A la espera de que “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos” llegue a mis manos y a las vuestras (ya me han dicho que está en proceso de maquetación), le debo esta entrada a mis alumnos.

Hoy les he leído un cuento mío inédito que irá incluido en el segundo libro de cuentos que publique (si habéis visto el vídeo de la presentación de “Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados” sabréis que los cuentos tendrán como protagonistas a criaturas fantásticas y no a animales) y les he pedido que se conviertan en los primeros ilustradores.

Siempre intento que adquieran gusto por leer y me aprovecho un poco de ser escritor para encender en ellos esa llamita para que lean todo lo posible.

El resultado ha sido este que veis, ¡no han podido hacerlo mejor! Les he prometido que subiría los que mejor quedaran, y aquí lo tenéis. Espero que os gusten tanto como a mí.

Still waiting for my new book to get published (I’ve been told they are already editing it), I owe this post to my students.

Today I have told them a tale written by myself that will be one of the six stories included in my second children book (with fantastic creatures as their protagonists) and I have asked them to be the first illustrators.

I always try to instil them the taste for reading and I take my author position in advantage to light a small flame in them and try to make them read as much as they can.

This is the result; they’ve done it fantastically! I have promised them that I was going to upload the best ones to my blog, so here you go. I hope you’ll like them as much as I do.

Cambios en Tamarán/ Changes in Tamarán

Quizás me pase por inexperto, por iluso o por ansioso; o, quizás, me pase un poco por todo.

Os informé de que mi próximo libro, «El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos», se publicaría en Navidades y no va  a poder ser así, como habréis notado. La «culpa» la tuvo una ya amiga que me dijo que necesitaba darle una vuelta a la novela y corregir algunos errores que había. Al principio me ha estado ayudando ella (enseñando, diría yo), pero sus obligaciones le impiden seguir haciéndolo y «solo» (es ya muchísimo para mí) me pudo revisar más o menos la mitad.

¿Qué ocurre ahora? Pues que me toca darme la paliza y terminar yo las revisiones durante las vacaciones de Navidad. Entre varios lectores que me están echando una mano para descubrir errores y lo aprendido, quiero dejar todo cerrado, como tarde, a finales de enero. Eso sí, ya no os informo de fechas hasta que todo sea seguro, que luego tengo que desdecirme 😉

Hasta entonces, espero que lo entendáis, dejaré el blog en pausa, que es mucho trabajo el que tengo que hacer. Si hay noticias importantes, os las comunicaré en cuanto pueda.

Maybe it happens to me because I am unexperienced, naive or an eager; or maybe it is a mix of everything.

I informed you that my next book, “The destiny of Tamarán: The incognito kingdoms”, was going to be published in Christmas and it will be impossible, as you would’ve noticed. I “blame” it on a friend who told me that I needed to re-think the novel and correct some mistakes that she found. She has been helping me for some time, but “only” revised the half of the book, but her obligations need her, so she has had to quit (thanks!).

So, what now? I need to work a lot to finish up the revisión myself during Christmas holidays. Helped by some readers and by everything I have learnt, I want to close everything at the end of January, the latest. But I won’t give you any dates anymore 😉

Until then, I hope you’ll understand, the blog will remain in stand-by, as it is a lot of work to do. If I need to give you some important news, I will do it as soon as I can.

Correctores/ Correctors

Después de tu revisión, con sus pertinentes correcciones, podrás decir que tienes un borrador listo para el siguiente paso. ¿Cuál es? ¿Lo envío ya a las editoriales? Podrías hacerlo sí, pero mi consejo es otro.

Los que somos escritores primerizos tenemos que ser conscientes de que somos nuevos en esto de la literatura. Hemos podido leer muchísimo, haber hecho cursos de escritura creativa, haber consulado miles de manuales… Pero somos nuevos.

Pensad en que salís de la universidad y empezáis en un nuevo empleo. ¿Alguien ha podido ponerse a trabajar sin más? A mí, honestamente, no. Han tenido que enseñarme los que llevaban más tiempo en ese empleo, me han tutorizado y enseñado hasta que, en algún momento, he adquirido los mecanismos necesarios para no necesitar más tutela. Con lo de escribir sucede algo parecido. Por muy bien que pensemos que está nuestro libro, es prácticamente imposible que no hayamos caído en errores “típicos de principiantes”, ¡y es algo normal! Entonces, ¿qué hago?

Podría poneros una lista inmensa de profesionales que se ofrecen a corregir vuestros textos, pero os aburriría. Echad un ojo por Internet. Seguro que hay correctores que se adecúan al tipo de historia que habéis escrito. En mi caso, como escribo fantasía, os puedo hablar de la genial Ana González Duque y, de paso, invitaros a su blog y a su canal de youtube. Aprenderéis muchísimo acerca de cómo escribir fantasía (y cómo no hacerlo).

Seguro que vuestro libro gana y que las editoriales, cuando enviéis el texto, lo miran con mejores ojos.

After your revision, with its corrections, you can say you have a draft ready for the next step. What is it? Do I send it to the publishing houses yet? You could do it, but here you have my advice.

Us, unexperienced authors, have to know that we are beginners in literature. We could’ve read a lot, could’ve attended many creative writing workshops, could’ve consulted plenty manuals…  But we are still unexperienced.

Think about finishing university and start working in a new job. Has anyone started doing everything by him/ herself? Being honest, not me. Someone has had to teach me until, at some point, I have achieved the necessary mechanics to stop needing a mentor. With writing is more or less the same thing. Even if we think our book is perfect, it is quite impossible that we haven’t made any “beginner mistakes”, and it is normal!

So, what do I do, then? I could write down a lot of professional correctors that will help you with your texts, but it will be boring. Take a look on the Internet. You will find different corrector specialized in different kind of genre. In my case, as I write fantasy, I can tell you about the amazing Ana González Duque and, plus, invite you all to her blog and youtube channel. You will learn so much about how to write fantasy (and how not to write it).
