Nueva charla en la universidad/ New chat at the university

Ayer, 21 de abril, volví a ir a la Facultad de Educación de la UCM para charlar sobre literatura y educación (tal y como hice hace unos meses https://jorgepozosoriano.com/2015/12/22/charla-en-la-facultad-de-educacion-de-la-ucm-talk-at-the-faculty-of-education/ ), esta vez, con los alumnos de magisterio.

No os voy a contar de nuevo en qué consistió, pero sí quiero comentaros algunas ideas que salieron de la charla.

Hubo alumnos que me transmitieron que los cuentos daban a entender que ese problema que surge no se puede superar por uno mismo, ya que siempre hay otro personaje que es el que “provoca” ese cambio necesario. Acepto y agradezco toda opinión e interpretación, pero, como les expliqué, esa no es la intención, sino toda la contraria. Los cuentos intentar mostrar que no hay que tenerle miedo a esos “problemas”, sino enfrentarse a ellos y luchar por superarlos. Sí, es cierto que en casi todas las historias hay algún personaje que facilita esa superación, al igual que ocurre en la vida real. Quien no se apoya en sus seres queridos tendrá mucho más difícil salir adelante, y eso es lo que quise transmitir al escribirlos.

También me dijeron que en el cuento de “Hip, un dragón especial” el juego de roles estaba demasiado marcado: los machos son los guerreros y las hembras, las que se ocupan del hogar. Puede ser, me lo apunto y aprendo del comentario.

Yesterday, April, 21st, I came back to the UCM  Faculty of Education to talk about literature and education (just like I did some months ago https://jorgepozosoriano.com/2015/12/22/charla-en-la-facultad-de-educacion-de-la-ucm-talk-at-the-faculty-of-education/ ), this time, with students of Teaching.

I am not going to repeat myself saying what was it about, but I want to tell you some ideas that came up during the chat.

There were some students that told me the tales expressed that, when you have a problem, you cannot deal with it by yourself, as there are always other characters that make the protagonists solve it. I accept and thank every opinión, but, as I told them, that wasn’t my intention at all, but the contrary. The tales try to show that you don’t have to panic when you have a problem, but to face it and fight to forget them. Yes, it is true that in almost all the stories there is another character who helps the protagonist, as it happens in real life. For those who don’t rely on their beloved people it will be much more difficult to go ahead, and this is what I wanted to say when I wrote them.

They also said that, in the tale with the dragons, the roles are too clear, as males are warriors and females attend the houses. Maybe they were right, so I’ll keep and eye on it in the future.

Taller de ilustración/ Illustration workshop

Desde que vi sus dibujos, supe que ella era quien tenía que ilustrar mi libro de cuentos. No tuve ninguna duda. No había nadie mejor que Marta para ponerle color y forma a mis palabras, y no me equivoqué.

Hoy, todo esto ha quedado más constatado aún cuando la he visto con esa alegría, esa soltura y esa capacidad tan extraordinaria de dibujar cualquier cosa con una facilidad absolutamente pasmosa. Le da igual que sean ratones con sus distintas emociones que gorilas, medusas o cocodrilos.

Los alumnos se lo han pasado genial. Mis compañeros, también. Yo la miraba hablar y crear y, aunque suene un poco ñoño, me sentía orgulloso. Por ella, por supuesto, pero también un poco por mí, por tener la inmensa suerte de haberla conocido y de haberme embarcado con ella en este precioso proyecto.

Since I saw her drawings, I knew she was the one that had to illustrate my book. I had no doubt at all. There wasn’t anyone better tan her to colour and shape my words, and I was completely right.

Today, all that has been even more confirmed when I have seen her with her happiness, her skill and her extraordinary capacity of drawing anything with an absolutely astonishing ability. It doesn’t matter if it is a mouse with its feelings, a gorilla, jellyfish or crocodiles. She draws everything just in a perfect way.

Our students have had a nice time. So have my colleagues. I was looking at her while she was speaking and creating and, although it might sound a bit cheesy, I was so proud. Proud of her, of course, but also of me, because I am so lucky to have her in my life and to have started with her this beautiful project.

Semana del libro/ Book week

Después de pasar un tiempo dándole vueltas a cómo intentar que el blog sea (o siga siendo) interesante, he anotado varias ideas que creo me ayudarán y que iréis viendo en los próximos días.

Hoy, sin embargo, os cuento los planes que tengo para la semana del libro, que me tienen muy contento:

Martes 19: taller de ilustración en mi colegio con Marta Marbán de Frutos, como sabéis, la ilustradora de “Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados”.

Jueves 21: charla con alumnos de Magisterio en la Facultad de Educación de la UCM sobre literatura, educación y los puntos positivos de ser escritor cuando se es profesor de primaria.

Viernes 22: cuentacuentos, “Las bufandas de Lina”, en mi colegio, ¡disfrazados y todo!

Os contaré qué tal sale cada acto.

After a while thinking how to try to make the blog interesting (or keeping it being so), I have written down a few ideas that I think will help and that you will check in the next days.

However, today I want to tell you the plans I have for the Book Week, plans that make me very happy:

Tuesday, 19th: illustration workshop in my school with Marta Marbán de Frutos, as you know, my book’s ilustrator.

Thursday, 21st: meeting with Teaching students at the Education Faculty to talk about education, literature and the possitive aspects of being an author when you are a teacher.

Friday, 22nd: storytelling with one of my tales in my school.

I will tell you how it goes!

Regalo de navidad/ A present for Christmas

El pasado día 23 de diciembre me hicieron un regalazo de navidad. Gracias a un amigo, me ofrecieron realizar un cuentacuentos de algún cuento mío en el Hospital del Sureste, en Arganda del Rey, como parte de un evento para los niños hospitalizados y los hijos de los empleados. No pude decir que no.

Susana, mi socia en esto de contar historias, tampoco pudo resistirse cuando le propuse acompañarme, así que tuvimos que vernos para ver qué cuento contar y cómo hacerlo.

Viendo las posibilidades, decidimos que el cuento que más posibilidades nos ofrecía para contarlo de esa manera era el que da título al libro, “Las bufandas de Lina”.

Tras comprar varios artículos para disfrazarnos un poco y pasarme una semana entera haciendo mariposas de cartulina y flores de goma EVA, nos plantamos en un salón de actos lleno de peques ante los que dimos lo mejor de nosotros para hacer que pudieran pasar un buen rato (y, según nos dijeron, así fue).

No puedo compartir el vídeo con vosotros porque aparecen los niños, pero sí os dejo algunas fotos para que veáis cómo fue.

A ver si, con un poco de suerte, nos salen más cositas de estas porque nos lo pasamos GENIAL.

Last December, 23rd I received an amazing present for Christmas. Thanks to a good friend, I got offered to do a storytelling with one of my tales in a hospital in Arganda del Rey, as a part of an event for the hospitalised children and the staff ones. I couldn’t refuse it.

Susana, my partner when it0s about telling stories, couldn’t resist neither when I gave her the chance to join me, so we just had to meet up and decide which tale to tell and how.

Considering our options, we decided that tha story with more possibilities for us was the one than name the book “Lina’s scarves”.

After buying some dressing-up articles and spending a whole week cutting cardboard butterflies and foam flowers, we got into a completely crowded room full of children, so we had to gave our best just to make them happy (and, according to what we have been told, we did it).

I cannot share the video because the children are in it, but I can show you some pictures to let you know how it was.

Let’s see if, luckily, we can do it more often because we had an amazing time.

Charla en la facultad de educación de la UCM/ Talk at the faculty of education

La pasada semana tuve el enorme honor de acudir a la facultad de educación de la Universidad Complutense (donde estudié el grado en maestro de primaria) para charlar con los alumnos de pedagogía sobre literatura, educación y, a lo Paco Umbral, de mi libro.

Junto a Marta de Hoyos (ya famosa en este blog), pudimos hablar de la importancia de la lectura y la escritura (más aún siendo maestro), de cómo se crean las historias, cómo se pueden trabajar en el aula, el proceso de publicación… No sin antes comentar lo que les había parecido mi libro, ya que lo habían trabajado en el aula.

En contra de lo que pensaba, no estuve nada nervioso y me sentí muy cómodo, por lo que el resultado fue una conversación fue bastante fluida e interesante. ¿Será que me estoy acostumbrando ya a este tipo de actos?

Solo me queda darle las gracias a Marta una vez más y a los alumnos con los que compartí ese tiempo.

Last week I had the honour of going to the Complutense faculty of education (where I studied) to have a chat with the pedagogy students about literature, education and, why not, my book.

With the already famous in this blog Marta de Hoyos, we could talk about how important reading and writing is (specially if you are a teacher), how to create a story, how to use it in he school, the publication process… And, also, about what they thought about my book, since they read it for this occasion.

Besides what I thought, I wasn’t nervous at all and I felt quite comfy, so we could create a fluent and very interesting conversation. Is it that I am getting used to this kind of events?

I just want to thank Marta once again and also the students I could share my words with.

Voy a ser muy, muy breve con esta entrada… Solo quiero deciros a todos y a todas los que estáis ahí que (como dice el título), por fin (por fin, por fin)… ¡Me van a publicar! No voy a dar más información básicamente porque no la tengo, pero es firme y en una o dos semanas me reúno con mi editor. Lo único que puedo deciros es que va a ser el libro de «Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animalados» y daros un millón de gracias por todo el apoyo que me habéis dado siempre.

I am going to be very, very quick with this post… I just want to tell all of you that (as the title says), at last (at last, at last)… I am going to get published! I am not going to give you more information basically because I don’t have it, but is firm and in one or two weeks I will have a meeting with my editor. Leer con el corazón/ Reading with the heart

¿Sabéis esos libros que te atrapan desde la primera página? ¿Esos que de verdad disfrutas, que se te quedan dentro? Yo acabo de descubrir uno. Me lo trajeron los Reyes Magos y, como siempre, acertaron totalmente: «La ladrona de libros«, de Markus Zusak. Una auténtica delicia.

Probablemente lo conozcáis porque se ha hecho la película hace poco pero, aun gustándome mucho el cine, dudo que sea mejor que el libro. Por cómo está escrito, por lo original en la forma, por el lenguaje… Es de esos libros que tienes que leer despacito para disfrutar de cada palabra, de cada frase… ¿Os ha pasado alguna vez?

Además, los libros se presentan como el mejor regalo del mundo… ¿Qué más se puede pedir? Os lo recomiendo a todos y a todas, estoy seguro de que os gustará tanto como a mí.

Do you know those books that catch your attention from the first page? Those that you really enjoy, that stay inside of you? I have just found one out. It was a present from the Three Wise Men and, as they always do, they hit the target: «The book thief«, by Markus Zusak. A complete delight.

You’ll probably heard about it because they have made a movie recently but, even if I like movies a lot, I doubt that it is as good as the book. Because of the way it has been written, because of its originality, because of the language… It is one of those books that you have to read very slowly to enjoy every word, every sentence… Has it ever happened to you as well?

Furthermore, books are presented as the best of the presents in the world… What else can we ask for? I reccomend you all to read it, I am sure you will like it as well as I do.

¿De dónde vienen las ideas?/ Where do the ideas come from?

A veces me preguntan que cómo se me ha ocurrido escribir las historias que escribo, cuál ha sido la razón para escribir un determinado texto.

¿De dónde sacas las ideas? Pues, a veces, se me ocurre una sola frase y la dejo reposar hasta que encuentro cómo incluirla en una historia. Otras veces es un personaje. O un diálogo. O una imagen. Hay poemas que he escrito a partir de un solo verso. Novelas que salen de un sueño. Cuentos que aparecen gracias a un peluche.

Lo importante es tener los ojos y los oídos bien abiertos para empaparse de todo lo que ocurre a nuestro alrededor. Cualquier detalle puede ser el inicio de una buena historia.

Sometimes people ask me how I can write the stories that I write, what was the reason to write a specific text.

Where do you get the ideas from? Well, sometimes, it is just one sentence that I let there until I find how to include it in a story. Other times it is a character. A dialogue. Or an image. I have written some poems from a single verse. Novels that start with a dream. Tales that appear thanks to a soft toy.

The most important thing is to keep eyes and ears wide open so we can absorb everything that is surrounding us. Any detail could be the beginning of a nice story.

Empieza un nuevo año/ A new year starts

Después de unas semanitas de vacaciones en mi adorada Madrid, ya he vuelto a Londres y a mis rutinas, lo que incluye retomar el blog.

Quiero aprovechar esta entrada, la primera de este año, para contaros los planes que tengo para este 2015.

  • Trabajo: si mis planes salen como espero, estaré en Londres hasta finales agosto. Ya os contaré más detalles en otra entrada, porque hay algunos proyectos en el aire que pueden salir o no. Después de eso, espero poder volver a Madrid.
  • Libros: acabo de terminar una historia breve en la misma línea de “A la sombra de un gigante” y ya está en manos de la genial Alicia Roy para que le dé vida. También estoy escribiendo el desenlace de una novela que empecé el verano pasado y que espero terminar en no más de un par de meses. Después de eso, tendré que decidir con qué sigo…

  • Publicaciones: en contacto aún con editoriales, desde luego, la crisis que aún hay en España no es el mejor panorama para un escritor primerizo. Aun así, no desisto y sigo intentándolo con todas mis fuerzas. Tengo buenas sensaciones para este año, espero que se cumplan.

Y creo que eso es todo. Tendréis que estar pendientes del blog para saber si cierro proyectos o no…

After some weeks of holidays in my dear Madrid, I have come back to London and to my routines, including the blog.

I want to take this post into advantage to tell you about my plans for this 2015.

  • Work: if my plans go as I hope, I will be in London until the end of August. I will give you more details in another post, as there are some projects that can happen or not. After that, I hope I can come back to Madrid.
  • Books: I have just finished writing a short story in the same line as “In the shadow of a giant”, and the brilliant Alicia Roy is taking a look at it to make it come to life. I am also writing the end of a novel that I have started last summer and I hope I’ll finish it in a couple of months. Then, I will have to decide what will be the next…

  • Publications: still in contact with some publishing houses, the crisis we have in Spain is not the best scenario for a “rookie”. However, I don’t give up and I keep trying as hard as I can. I have good feelings for this new year, I just hope I am right.

And I think that’s all for now. You will have to keep an eye on the blog to know if I get some projects…
