¡Sorpresa, sorpresa!/ Surprise, surprise!

Tras más de ocho años desde que tuve la primera idea, hoy puedo decir que la publicación de “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos” está a la vuelta de la esquina.

Tras el envío, anoche, de las correcciones del tercer borrador que me envió la editorial (con muy poquitos errores ya), mi genial editor me quiso hacer el regalo de enviarme la primera versión de la portada justo antes de irme a dormir.

No sé si será la definitiva al cien por cien, pero, si no es así, el cambio será mínimo.

Solo puedo, una vez más, darle las gracias a Diego Iturriaga, mi editor, a la maquetadora, que está haciendo un trabajazo, y decir que me encanta cómo está quedando todo y que si, hasta ahora, había controlado bien los nervios… ¡a partir de ahora soy incapaz de controlarlos!

After more than eight years since I had the first idea, today I can say that the publication of “The destiny of Tamarán: The incognito kingdoms” is around the corner.

Last night, after sending the corrections of the third draft that my publishing house sent to me (with just a few mistakes), my amazing editor wanted to make me a present and he emailed me the first version of the cover right before I went bed.

I don’t know if this one will be the last one, but, if not, not much will be changed.

I just can say, once again, thanks to Diego Iturriaga, my editor, and the designer, who is making a huge effort. I can add that I love the way it looks so far and that, if I have been able to control my nerves until this moment… I can’t make it from now on!

¡Estoy de vuelta!/ I am back!

¡Ya estoy de vuelta!

Esta entrada va destinada a disculparme, a contaros cómo va el proceso de “El destino de Tamarán” y a comentaros cositas sobre el blog.

Lo primero, pediros perdón por la tardanza en retomar el blog. La última revisión del libro me supuso un esfuerzo ingente y, entre eso y otras obligaciones, necesitaba descansar un poco.

En cuanto a Tamarán, tal y como quería, dejé todo enviado antes de que terminara el mes de enero (libro revisado, ilustraciones, textos para la contra, biografías, agradecimientos…), así que ya solo queda esperar a que maqueten e impriman. Os daría una fecha, pero prefiero ser cauto y avisaros cuando ya sea definitiva (sorry!).

Este tiempo también lo he empleado en pensar cómo puedo mejorar el blog. Siguiendo consejos y espiando algunos a algunos blogueros tengo algunas ideas (reseñas, algún vídeo, consejos literarios…). Quiero intentar hacerlo más atractivo para vosotros, así que espero acertar.

Nada más por el momento. Os iré informando de las novedades sobre Tamarán, que ya está a punto de caramelo ¡y aún no me lo creo!

I am back!

I am using this post to apologize with you, to tell you about how “The destiny of Tamarán” goes and to share with you some things about the blog.

First, please forgive me for taking such a long break. The last revision of the book has been exhausting and due to some other obligations, I needed to relax for a little while.

About Tamarán, just as I wanted to do, I sent it all before February (book, illustrations, texts for the cover, biographies, appreciations…), so now we just need to wait until it gets edited and printed. I would love to give you a date, but I prefer to be careful and wait until I’ve got something definitive.

I’ve used this break also to think about how to improve my blog. Following some advices and spying some other bloggers I’ve got some ideas (reviews, some videos, writing advices…). I want to try to make it catchier for you, so I hope I can make it.

Nothing else so far. I will keep you updated about Tamarán, I can’t wait to have it with me!

Editoriales/ Publishing houses

No voy a contar más sobre las veces que hay que revisar, corregir, re-revisar y re-corregir. Si habéis seguido más o menos los pasos necesarios, habréis llegado a tener un manuscrito aceptable (¡hurra!).

¿Cómo se lo envío a las editoriales? Con cautela y con cabeza.

No todas las editoriales reciben manuscritos de todos los géneros. Si vuestro libro es, como supongo, infantil o juvenil, dedicad algo de tiempo a ver qué editoriales los publican. Id a una librería y ojead.

Cada editorial pone sus normas. Algunas aceptan e-mails, otras lo piden impreso. Algunas piden también una breve ficha con tu información y con una sinopsis o presentación de tu obra. Otras, directamente, no aceptan envíos. Visitad sus páginas.

Las editoriales reciben miles de manuscritos, así que sed escuetos, directos y, sobre todo, atractivos, diferentes, llamad su atención.

Es un trabajo durísimo, especialmente si no has publicado nada aún y no tienes miles de seguidores en tus redes. Yo tuve la suerte de que una editorial como Endymion se decidiera a apostar por mí y estoy encantado con ellos y muy agradecido. Tanto que serán esa misma editorial, como sabéis, la que publicará “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos”.

Para este último paso, con el que ya termino esta serie de entradas, os deseo mucho ánimo y os animo a que no paréis de llamar a puertas hasta que os abran alguna, ¡merecerá la pena!

I am not going to repeat how many times you will need to revise, correct, re-revise and re-correct. If you have, more or less, followed the necessary steps, you may have an acceptable manuscript (hurray!).

How do I send it to the publishing houses? With caution and head.

Not every publishing house receive any kind of genre manuscripts. If your book is, as I understand, for children or young, take some time to see which ones publish these kind of books. Go to a bookshop and take a look.

Every publishing house has its own rules. Some accept e-mails, some want it printed. Some also want some information about you or your book. Others just don’t accept manuscripts. Go to their webs and spy a bit.

The publishing houses receive thousands of manuscripts, so be brief, go straight to the point and be attractive, different, try to catch their attention.

It is a very hard work, specially if you haven’t published anything yet and you haven’t got thousands of followers on your networks. I was very lucky and Endymion believed in me and my book and I am very pleased and thankful with them. Actually, as you know, they will publish my next book: “The destiny of Tamarán: The incognito kingdoms”.

For this last step, the one I finish this series of posts with, I encourage you not to surrender and keep knocking on every door you find until one of them opens for you, it will worth it!

¡Ya estoy escribiendo!/ I am already writing!

Ya está. Ya lo has conseguido. Has sido capaz de empezar tu historia, esa que llevabas tiempo pensando y que, por fin,  has convertido en letras. Y, ahora, ¿qué?

Habrá quien te aconseje leer manuales de escritura, apuntarte a talleres, estudiar técnicas… Sí, puede ayudar y siempre es una opción, pero mi consejo es que, primero, te pruebes. Si has llegado hasta aquí, si has encontrado la idea, has planificado tu trabajo y te has sentado a escribir, hazlo. Hazlo y mira a ver qué ocurre. Puede que compruebes que necesitas algún tipo de ayuda o puede que el proceso de escritura fluya.

Pruébate. Tú mismo verás si eres capaz de terminar esa historia por ti mismo o si vas a tener que buscar algunos apoyos.

Si has leído mucho sobre el género que vayas a escribir, ya conocerás cómo funciona. Sigue leyendo y, sobre todo, sigue escribiendo.

It’s done. You got it. You have been able of starting your story, the one you were thinking about for that long and, at last, you have changed it into letters. And now, what?

Some people will tell you to read some writing manuals, to join a writing workshop, to study some techniches… Yes, it can help and it is always an option, but my advice is to, first, try yourself. If you have arrived to this point, if you have found the idea, you have planned your work and you have sitted to write, do it. Do it and see what happens. Maybe you find out that you need some help or maybe the writing process flows by itself.

Try yourself. You will see if you are able to finish the story by yourself ori f you will need to find some support.

If you have read a lot of books with the genre you are writing, you will know how it works. Keep on reading and, overall, keep on writing.

Vencer a la página en blanco/ Beating the blank page

Muy bien. Hemos organizado las ideas y estamos dispuestos a vencer  a la página en blanco. Tranquilos, si habéis hecho bien las cosas, empezaréis pronto a llenarla de letras.

Al igual que siempre se aconseja leer mucho si queremos ser escritores. Otro consejo una vez que empecemos a escribir es ese mismo. Escribir. No importa que no nos salga perfecto, que nos atoremos, que nos equivoquemos. Tendréis tiempo de enmendar esos errores. Lo que cuenta es ser constantes (eso es, desde mi punto de vista, lo más complicado de escribir: la constancia). Escribir un poco cada día y no perder el hilo de la historia. Si no escribís a diario, creedme (lo sé) de que os vais a arrepentir.

La historia, si la tenéis más o menos clara y más o menos organizada, irá saliendo.

It’s always recommended to read a lot if we want to become authors. Another advice once we start writing is that very same. Writing. It doesn’t matter if it is not perfect, if we get stuck or if we make mistakes. You will have time to correct all of them. What matters is being constant (that is, from my point of view, the most difficult thing when you write: perseverance). Writing a little bit every day and not losing the thread of the story. Si ya tenemos todo claro y nos lanzamos a escribir, mi consejo es que escribáis un esquema si no queréis que el proceso de escritura sea un completo caos. Os lo recomiendo porque yo no lo hice para escribir “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos” y fue algo de lo que siempre me arrepentí.

Si organizáis bien aspectos como los capítulos que vais a incluir y qué va a ocurrir (más o menos) en ellos o qué personajes van a aparecer y cómo van a ser, os aseguro que todo os resultará mucho más sencillo.

Pensad que, a no ser que seáis ya autores consagrados que podáis vivir de la literatura (y no creo que nadie así lea mi blog), no dispondréis de todo el tiempo que os gustaría para escribir. Por lo tanto, os veréis obligados a parar y a retomarlo varias veces y, si ese esquema no existe, os volveréis locos cuando volváis a la historia para continuarla.

Yo mismo intentaré hacerlo cuando escriba la segunda parte de la saga, parte que continuaré (porque, sí, ya está empezada) en cuanto pueda.

If you have clear everything and start to write, my advice is to write a scheme if you don’t want the writing process to be a complete chaos. It is my recommendation because I didn’t do it when I wrote “The destiny of Tamarán: The incognito kingdoms” and it was something I always regretted.

If you organize well aspects like the chapters you are going to include and what the are about or the characters and how they are, I assure you that everything will be much easier for you.

Don’t forget that, unless you are a renowned author able to live just writing (and I don’t think people with that profile read my blog), you won’t have all the time you’ll need to write. So, you will have to stop and re-start several times and, if that scheme doesn’t exist, you will get mad when you’ll need to continue the story.

I will try to follow my own advice when I’ll write the second part of the saga, which I’ll continue (because, yes, I have already started writing it) as soon as I can.

El principio/ The beginning

Ya tenemos la idea (aunque no sepamos muy bien dónde va a llegar) y decidimos empezar a llenar el folio de letras. ¿Miedo a comenzar? ¿Creemos que seremos incapaces? Los miedos se superan siendo valientes y no seremos capaces de nada si no lo intentamos.

Mi consejo es que, antes de ponernos a aporrear el teclado, dejemos que esa idea madure lentamente en nuestra cabeza. Podemos ir tomando notas en una libreta o en apps que sirvan para tal fin hasta que, finalmente, demos con la clave de cómo empezar.

Un buen amigo, escritor ya más que consagrado, me dijo que las primeras palabras de un libro eran fundamentales, porque eran la presentación a la lectura. Por eso, me aconsejó que pensara muy bien en ellas, que las escogiera con cariño y que intentara, en la medida de lo posible, captar la atención de posibles lectores. Una vez que sepamos cómo vamos a comenzar, todo será mucho más sencillo.

Hay instantes en los que la rueda de la vida puede dar un giro tan brusco que todo lo que nos rodea, sin apenas esperarlo, se desmorona ante nuestros propios ojos. Momentos en los que nuestra existencia se ve transformada de repente, sin que podamos hacer nada para evitarlo. De este modo, la vida de Gabriel cambió en un solo instante, en un solo momento, y ya nunca volvería a ser la misma.

– Papá, y ¿por qué?

We’ve got the idea (even if we don’t know where it will take us to) and we decide to start filling the page with letters. Afraid of start writing? Do we think we won’t be capable? Fears disappear being brave and we won’t be capable of anything if we don’t try.

My advice is that, before you start hitting the keyboard, you should let that idea ripen in your head. We can take notes on a notebook or using some apps designed to do so until the moment we, finally, reach the point where we want to start with.

A good friend, more than a renowned author, told me that the first words of a book were essential as they are the presentation of it. For that reason, he asked me to think carefully about those words, to choose them with love and to tray, as much as I could, to catch the reader’s attention. Once we know how to start, everything will be much easier.

There are some instants when the wheel of life can spin so sharply that everything surrounding us, without expecting anything at all, collapses just in front of our own eyes. That way, Gabriel’s life changed in just an instant, in just a moment, and it will never be the same anymore.

El proceso: la primera idea/ The process: the first idea

En esta serie de entradas voy a intentar contaros cómo evoluciona un libro desde que se tiene la primera idea hasta que se publica. Creo (y espero no equivocarme) que a algunos os podrá interesar y a otros puede que os ayude si tenéis en mente publicar algún día.

Como algunos sabréis, Tamarán viene de muy lejos. El sueño que inspiró la historia lo tuve durante el año que viví en Italia, es decir, en 2007. En ese sueño, un niño bajaba por una especie de sendero hasta llegar a un lago sobre el que caía una cascada. Nada más. Me podréis preguntar qué tiene que ver eso con una historia de fantasía en un mundo inventado y con criaturas producto (la mayoría) de mi imaginación, y os contestaré que no mucho. El segundo capítulo del libro empieza, eso sí, con ese mismo sueño.

En principio no pensé que fuera a servirme para mucho y ni se me pasó por la cabeza que fuera a derivar en una trilogía de literatura fantástica, pero dejé que esa idea tomara forma y, al ir escribiendo, la imaginación (o, quizás, el destino) me llevaron a escribir el primer tomo de esta trilogía que, como sabéis, llevará por nombre “El destino de Tamarán”.

Ese fue el principio de todo, la chispa que provocó el fuego. Si me seguís leyendo, os iré contando qué pasos tuve que dar hasta tener el sí de una editorial. ¿Os animáis?

During these following posts I’ll try to tell you how a book is developed since the first idea until it is published. I think (and I hope I am not wrong) that some of you may find it interesting and it may be helpful for those who have in mind publishing a book someday.

As some of you know, Tamarán comes from long ago. I had the dream that inspired the story when I was living in Italy, that is 2007. In that dream, a boy walked down a hill and found a lake with a waterfall feeding it. Nothing more tan that. You could ask me what it has got to do with a fantasy story in an invented world with creatures (the most of them) product of my imagination, and the answer will be that not much. The second chapter, however, starts with that dream.

At the beginning I didn’t think it was going to be handy at all and I never thought it could end up in a fantasy literature trilogy, but I let that idea growing up and, whilst I was writing, the imagination (or, maybe, the destiny) led me to write the first book of that trilogy called, as you know, “The destiny of Tamarán”.

That was the start of it all, the spark that provoked the fire. If you keep Reading my blog, I will tell you the steps I had to take until having a positive answer from a publishing house, will you take my hand?

El destino de Tamarán será una realidad/ The destiny of Tamarán will be a reality

Ninguna otra noticia podría haber sido mejor para volver de las vacaciones (siento el parón veraniego, lo necesitaba).

Ediciones Endymion (la misma editorial de «Las bufandas de Lina y otros cuentos animaladas») me ha dado el sí a esta saga de literatura fantástica y ya estamos trabajando para que pueda llegar a las librerías antes de la Navidad.

Os iré dando detalles según vayamos avanzando (quizás os interese saber cómo funciona el proceso de edición de un libro), pero cierro esta entrada con dos sorpresas:

Otra persona que ya anda trabajando en las ilustraciones es mi querida Marta Marbán de Frutos, y os va a dejar tan asombrados como a mí con su arte.

Lo mejor y lo peor de ser profe/ The best and worst aspects of being a teacher

Inauguro “sección” en el blog que será algo así como “Lo mejor y lo peor de ser profe”, ¡espero que os guste!

Voy a empezar, por ser este un blog sobre literatura y educación, con algo que afecta a los dos campos y que, lo siento, es negativo.

Vaya por delante que me encanta ser profe y que esas cosillas que menos me gustan las acepto y asumo como parte de un trabajo que elegí por pura vocación.

Una de las peores cosas de ser profe es que leo menos. Menos literatura, quiero decir. Antes de este año leía mucho, muchísimo más. A diario. A cada momento que estaba libre. Ahora, con un trabajo tan exigente y en el que tengo que leer y escribir tanto, no puedo evitar que se me quiten un poco (bastante) las ganas de leer en mis ratos libres. Creo que mi cabeza no quiere más letras cuando termina mi jornada. Me obligo a veces, sí, pero si nunca recomiendo la lectura a la fuerza para mis alumnos… tampoco puedo hacerlo para mí mismo. Supongo que tendré que esperar a esas vacaciones tan largas como necesarias para ponerme al día.

Prometo que la siguiente entrada de esta sección será sobre una cosa que me encante de ser profe (aunque los habituales ya sabréis más de una).

New “section” on the blog about “The best and worst aspects of being a teacher”, I hope you enjoy it!

I am going to start, as this is a blog about literature and education, with something that involves both fields and that, I am sorry, is a negative point.

First, I want to make sure that I love being a teacher and that those aspects that I don’t like that much are perfectly accepted and assumed as a part of the job I chose.

One of the worst things of being a teacher is that I read less than before. Less literature, I mean. Before this year, I used to read much more, much, much more. Every day. In every moment I was free. Now, with such a demanding job in which I have to read and write constantly, I can’t avoid loosing my appetite for reading a little bit (a lot) in my free time. I think my head doesn’t want more letters when I finish working. Sometimes I push myself to read, but, if I never recommend reading without wanting to do it, I cannot recommend it for myself. I suppose I’ll have to wait for those long and deserved holidays to relax and swallow some books.

I promise I will talk about a positive aspect next time!
