No voy a contar más sobre las veces que hay que revisar, corregir, re-revisar y re-corregir. Si habéis seguido más o menos los pasos necesarios, habréis llegado a tener un manuscrito aceptable (¡hurra!).

¿Cómo se lo envío a las editoriales? Con cautela y con cabeza.

No todas las editoriales reciben manuscritos de todos los géneros. Si vuestro libro es, como supongo, infantil o juvenil, dedicad algo de tiempo a ver qué editoriales los publican. Id a una librería y ojead.

Cada editorial pone sus normas. Algunas aceptan e-mails, otras lo piden impreso. Algunas piden también una breve ficha con tu información y con una sinopsis o presentación de tu obra. Otras, directamente, no aceptan envíos. Visitad sus páginas.

Las editoriales reciben miles de manuscritos, así que sed escuetos, directos y, sobre todo, atractivos, diferentes, llamad su atención.

Es un trabajo durísimo, especialmente si no has publicado nada aún y no tienes miles de seguidores en tus redes. Yo tuve la suerte de que una editorial como Endymion se decidiera a apostar por mí y estoy encantado con ellos y muy agradecido. Tanto que serán esa misma editorial, como sabéis, la que publicará “El destino de Tamarán: Los reinos incógnitos”.

Para este último paso, con el que ya termino esta serie de entradas, os deseo mucho ánimo y os animo a que no paréis de llamar a puertas hasta que os abran alguna, ¡merecerá la pena!

I am not going to repeat how many times you will need to revise, correct, re-revise and re-correct. If you have, more or less, followed the necessary steps, you may have an acceptable manuscript (hurray!).

How do I send it to the publishing houses? With caution and head.

Not every publishing house receive any kind of genre manuscripts. If your book is, as I understand, for children or young, take some time to see which ones publish these kind of books. Go to a bookshop and take a look.

Every publishing house has its own rules. Some accept e-mails, some want it printed. Some also want some information about you or your book. Others just don’t accept manuscripts. Go to their webs and spy a bit.

The publishing houses receive thousands of manuscripts, so be brief, go straight to the point and be attractive, different, try to catch their attention.

It is a very hard work, specially if you haven’t published anything yet and you haven’t got thousands of followers on your networks. I was very lucky and Endymion believed in me and my book and I am very pleased and thankful with them. Actually, as you know, they will publish my next book: “The destiny of Tamarán: The incognito kingdoms”.

For this last step, the one I finish this series of posts with, I encourage you not to surrender and keep knocking on every door you find until one of them opens for you, it will worth it!

Correctores/ Correctors

Después de tu revisión, con sus pertinentes correcciones, podrás decir que tienes un borrador listo para el siguiente paso. ¿Cuál es? ¿Lo envío ya a las editoriales? Podrías hacerlo sí, pero mi consejo es otro.

Los que somos escritores primerizos tenemos que ser conscientes de que somos nuevos en esto de la literatura. Hemos podido leer muchísimo, haber hecho cursos de escritura creativa, haber consulado miles de manuales… Pero somos nuevos.

Pensad en que salís de la universidad y empezáis en un nuevo empleo. ¿Alguien ha podido ponerse a trabajar sin más? A mí, honestamente, no. Han tenido que enseñarme los que llevaban más tiempo en ese empleo, me han tutorizado y enseñado hasta que, en algún momento, he adquirido los mecanismos necesarios para no necesitar más tutela. Con lo de escribir sucede algo parecido. Por muy bien que pensemos que está nuestro libro, es prácticamente imposible que no hayamos caído en errores “típicos de principiantes”, ¡y es algo normal! Entonces, ¿qué hago?

Podría poneros una lista inmensa de profesionales que se ofrecen a corregir vuestros textos, pero os aburriría. Echad un ojo por Internet. Seguro que hay correctores que se adecúan al tipo de historia que habéis escrito. En mi caso, como escribo fantasía, os puedo hablar de la genial Ana González Duque y, de paso, invitaros a su blog y a su canal de youtube. Aprenderéis muchísimo acerca de cómo escribir fantasía (y cómo no hacerlo).

Seguro que vuestro libro gana y que las editoriales, cuando enviéis el texto, lo miran con mejores ojos.

After your revision, with its corrections, you can say you have a draft ready for the next step. What is it? Do I send it to the publishing houses yet? You could do it, but here you have my advice.

Us, unexperienced authors, have to know that we are beginners in literature. We could’ve read a lot, could’ve attended many creative writing workshops, could’ve consulted plenty manuals…  But we are still unexperienced.

Think about finishing university and start working in a new job. Has anyone started doing everything by him/ herself? Being honest, not me. Someone has had to teach me until, at some point, I have achieved the necessary mechanics to stop needing a mentor. With writing is more or less the same thing. Even if we think our book is perfect, it is quite impossible that we haven’t made any “beginner mistakes”, and it is normal!

So, what do I do, then? I could write down a lot of professional correctors that will help you with your texts, but it will be boring. Take a look on the Internet. You will find different corrector specialized in different kind of genre. In my case, as I write fantasy, I can tell you about the amazing Ana González Duque and, plus, invite you all to her blog and youtube channel. You will learn so much about how to write fantasy (and how not to write it).

Rematando/ Closing it up

Ha pasado tiempo, tu cabeza se ha liberado un poco y tienes los consejos y opiniones de algunos lectores. ¿Qué hay que hacer? Corregir.

No penséis que es solo cambiar algunos errores, ojalá. Se trata de corregir, ampliar, quitar, recolocar… y estrujarte muchos los sesos. Mucho. Pensad que habéis terminado de hacer un puzle de muchas piezas y que, de repente, os cambian el dibujo y tenéis que rehacerlo. Algo así. Recolocáis una palabra, una frase, un párrafo, pero ya no os cuadra lo que tenéis antes ni lo que tenéis después.

Tened en mente que no será una sola revisión ni una sola corrección. Tendréis que hacer varias. Y, aun así, cuando hayáis terminado… No habréis terminado. Pero eso os lo contaré en el siguiente post.

It’s been some time, your head is free now and you have your readers’ advices and opinions. So what now? It’s time to for corrections.

Don’t think that it is just changing some mistakes, you wish. It is about correcting, adding, taking off, relocating… and wringing out your brain. A lot. Imagine that you have finished a big jigsaw puzzle and, unexpectedly, they change the drawing of the pieces and you need to do it again. Something like that. You relocate a word, a sentences or a paragraph, but then you need to relocate the previous or/ and the next ones.

Have in mind that it won’t be just one revision or just one correction. You will need to do more than one. And, even though, when you finish… You won’t finish. But I keep that part for the next post.
