La semana pasada tuve la enorme suerte de poder asistir a un par de encuentros con dos autores. El primero fue el lunes, y pude escuchar, conocer y hablar con Deborah Ellis, una escritora canadiense autora de “The breadwinner trilogy”, una preciosa saga sobre una la vida de una niña en Afganistán, entre otros muchos libros. La charla fue muy interesante y me llevé un ejemplar dedicado, además de poder hablar con gente de Oxford University Press y hacer algunos contactos, que nunca se sabe…

El segundo autor fue Bali Rai, un escritor británico muy comprometido con la integración. Este encuentro tuvo lugar en Oaks Park High School, el instituto donde trabajo y que me está dando tantas alegrías. Tuve la suerte de poder hablar con él durante bastante tiempo, un tío majísimo, muy cercano y que habla sin tapujos y sin pelos en la lengua. Me dio algunos consejos, que siempre vienen bien, y hasta me sigue ahora en Twitter, sigo ampliando mi red de contactos británicos… Sus libros se centran en personas normales, personas que puedes encontrar en la calle. Una maravilla de persona. Los chicos del instituto se quedaron encantados, al igual que me quedé yo.

Creo que estas pequeñas cosas, los encuentros con lectores, en colegios y demás lugares son las que realmente llenan a los escritores. Vale, sí, a todos nos gustaría “poder vivir de ello”, pero aunque se pueda, el contacto con personas que han leído tus libros, que quieren preguntarte sobre ellos, ofrecerte sus opiniones… Es solo imaginarlo y me entran escalofríos. Con suerte, dentro de poco podré comprobarlo, vosotros seréis mis lectores y yo estaré encantado de contestar todas las preguntas que hagan falta. ¿Quién se apunta?

Last week I had the amazing chance of attending a couple of meetings with two authors! The first meeting took place Monday 17th March with award-winning author Deborah Ellis, a Canadian writer who is the writer of  “The Breadwinner Trilogy” which is a beautiful saga about a girl in Afghanistan. The meeting was very interesting and I got a signed copy, as well as talking to some people from Oxford University Press and making some contacts, just in case…

The second meeting on the 19th of March was with British author Bali Rai, a writer who is very much engaged and in tune to the idea of integration. This meeting took place at Oaks Park High School, the school where I work and has bought me so much joy. I was lucky to have the opportunity to talk with such a nice guy for a long time. He was a very direct person who spoke openly and without beating about the bush about things. He gave me some advice, which is always welcome, and now he also follows me on Twitter. My network in the UK just keeps on growing… His books are centered on ordinary people, the kind of people that you can find walking on the streets. In his book he has given a lot of importance to the racial minorities. I found him to be a wonderful person.

I truly believe that these little things, the meetings with some readers, the visits to some schools and other places are the things that really fulfill the writers. Ok, yes, all of us would love to “be able to live just writing”, but even if this is possible, the contact with people that have read your books, that want to ask you some questions about them, offer you their opinions… It is just thinking of it and shivers. I hope that, sooner than later, I could check it, you will be my readers and I will be more than pleased of answering all the questions you may have. Who’s in?
